When i make a call my screen goes blank and I can't get it back on. It will come back on when I hit the end button. But can't access it during a call. What can I do?

If I'm reading this right, you'd like to do something other than phone while you're on a phone call - if that's the case just press 'Home'. You won't disconnect your call, and you can go on to other things.

Ok when I am on a call or even just making the call. As soon as I hit send. The screen goes blank. I hit every possible button and can not get it to come on. Since it goes blank as soon as i send, I cant see if i am calling the right #, I cant switch to speaker phone, I can see how long I have been on the call. Nothing. When I hit the end button the call stops and it goes back to my phone book.

Ah, that's not what I thought you were describing - sure enough, that's a problem. :)
First thing I'd wonder is if some app were trying to do 'something' while the phone is in use. Have you downloaded any apps that directly relate to phone usage (a contact app, or something)? Assuming that's a 'no', then I'd say it's time to take the phone to Vz to let them look at it. Though in my (very limited) experience they're going to look at it and say 'factory reset' - which is something you can do at home if you're so inclined.
If you go the reset route, be sure and back up your contacts first, as they'll be wiped out during a reset. *I* don't know of a setting anywhere that in effect says 'blank the screen during a call' - but of course that doesn't mean there isn't one.

MY screen goes blank in call, too. But if I whip my phone away from my ear it comes back on. Another "feature" I could do without.

I think its a great feature! When I call an automated system it comes in very handy. When you have to press a number to go to the next menu in the system and you pull the phone away from your ear, the phone pad is right there so you can make your selection.

As for the OP, I have no idea what the ptoblem could be, sorry.

I meant I would prefer the screen remain on. Sorry, that was unclear.

Colornshape You don't have to "whip" it away from your face.its the proximity feature so you don't hang up on the person with your ear. Why would you not want that feature?

Got ya! I still like it though. Dont have to worry about pressing the phone against my cheak and it pressing buttons. Not sure if the screen is that sensitive, but I am glad I wont have to find out.

I just can't help thinking it would have been just ar easy to let the user decide id the screen stays on while the touch interface is disabled. It's arrogance on the part of the programmers. They don't care if we object to things like this because view think we'll overlook then because of all the other major feats the phone can accomplish.

The worst part is they're right. Maybe they're reading these forums and will fix some of this stuff. I suppose we'll find out when the update comes along.

Dont you think you are taking it a little far there? Arrogance? I suppose I should be pissed that my car only has 4 cup holders ... after all I have a family of five!!! How arrogant of the designers to think I would only have 2 kids. :D

You're right, of course. That proclamation can't be made until and if they've completed the update, having had access to all the user feedback available at forums like this, and not fixed what can be fixed.

    I am optimistic they will.

LMAO...Well thanks guys for all the responses. Come to find out it is the case I have it. For some reason it is causing the problem. I took it out of the case and it is doing what it was before. Goes off as I hold it to ear and comes back on when I take it away. Is there a responsive setting? Maybe with the case it needs to be set a little more sensative?
Its not an actuall eris case I modified an otterbox case made for the iphone

I would say 10 to 1 users like and appreciate the proximity sensor and that the phone screen locks when placed next to your face.

going on that, the developers did a good job and nothing should be changed with this feature. this gives them time to work out other far more important bugs.

that's your problem, try to find a schematic of the phone and where exactly the sensor is, then you may be able to clear the material to make the sensor work right.

Here is where the prox sensor is. If you are feeling adventurous dremel out a hole in front of it and see what happens.

Ahh ok back to the drawing board. Well I didnt relize that the small sensor in the upper left corner was the proximity sensor. Well my case is covering that. So when I am making a call it is thinking the case is my cheek and activating it. Thanks for the help

I dont use anything as far as a case or a screen protector
and i have this problem a lot.

I'll be talking for about an hour or so and then i remove it to check a text, time etc etc
    and its still black

    however

1)If i press end ONCE, it will turn back on
    2)Sometimes Talk and Trackball work
3)If i put it back to my face and pull it away again(meaning pull it away, still black, so put it to my ear and pull away again) it works
