Does anyone else have to boot into hboot then select recovery in order to get to the ClockworkMod Recovery? I've tried searching for how to boot directly to it, but my search keywords may not have been good enough if it has already been posted.

Note: I just rooted using Unrevoked 3.22

    Install Rom Manager.

It has an option to boot into recovery.

Is it ok to use ROM Manager to make nandroid backups or should I do it through recovery?

    It's essentially the same thing
Do NOT rename the backups though.

Really? Thanks for the heads up about renaming. Coming from an Eris, I was going to rename my backup after making it

Several of the newer Roms also have expanded options in the reboot menu to go straight to recovery.

In ROM Manager when you make a backup it asks for you to name it. Is this ok or should I leave it blank?

It'll name it as the current date if you do nothing. That's probably the safest route because if you rename it, you may have issues restoring it in the future. It can be a little finnicky about nomenclature.
