Hey guys I'm brand new to the Android experience with my Moto Droid and so far I'm lovin it! I've done some reading on this forum about news and rooting. I like the idea of rooting for cool ROMs and to over clock my CPU. Can the 2.2 release screw up the ability to root the Droid? And if it can, should I do it now if the July 13th rumor is true?

Don't know if the OTA would screw up rooting after applying, but many people on here that have rooted are running 2.2 already and I am sure when the OTA comes out some clever dev will modify it if need be to work with rooted droids.

Root as soon as possible. There is no reason whatsoever to wait. Using a stock Droid is a pain in the tush, and I don't know how you can stand it, personally; there are endless ways to customize your Droid if you root, and there is no rational reason for not rooting RIGHT NOW (as soon as you can block off some time).

Even with the OTA 2.2 update, your Droid will run much more smoothly and a lot faster rooted and overclocked. And unless you root, you won't be able to use any custom themes. A stock Droid and a rooted, overclocked and themed Droid are two very different devices indeed.

If you root, you will find yourself addicted to flashing new roms, kernels, themes and basking in the sheer awesomeness of your Droid's performance.

If your a "Geek" like most of us here then I say go for it !!! And congratulations on the Droid, after you get rooted you will be so glad that you picked that device. There is so much that can be said about owning a device with such a large community behind it :) My previous phone was a Moto Q9c and the same can be said about the device also. And a big thanks goes out to all the fantastic Dev's that have made the Droid still a top notch phone wich I believe to still be the phone of choice if your a geek :) I have been rooted since 2.0.1 and have never looked back. I have jrummys V4.0.7 froyo 2.2 rom overclocked with jfdlg's 1.2ghz kernel running flash 10.1 and with my slingbox its twice the phone of anything else out there (IMHO) :D

For the stock Droiders 2.2 will be a nice upgrade but unless it gets overclocked included I just dont see how it can run as well as mine.

grats on the droid! if you want some real awesomesauce, and want to be cooler than all your droid owning friends then definately ROOT! i rooted 2 days ago, and i don't think i've put my phone down since, and i haven't even scratched the surface of what i can do with a rooted droid. all my droid owning friends are jealous and drooling and my rooted phone runs faster and more solid than stock.

i used the instructions and video i found on androidforums.com to root and it came out perfect the first time. here's the link http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/47349-now-you-can-live-without-fear-bricking.html

Do you have a link for a clean and updated version of 2.2 Froyo as I just tested one and it was slow as all hell. It appeared very buggy. I can imagine there is a thousand versions out there (forget where I got it). However you appear to be happy with your version would you mind sharing your source to a newbie?

    Cheers!

    PS

Is there a version out there with the WIFI kernal included?

You can find several good froyo roms from here. WIFI not working is a thing of the past.
