Hi! I'm new to this forum so first I'll shout a "Hey" to everyone and thanks in advance for any advice!

So, I jumped from an iPhone 3GS to a Nexus One with AT&T. Basically, me and my friend..we swapped our phones. He'd modified the Nexus One and I'd jailbroken my iPhone.
I read online how to do a Full Wipe to start from a Clean Slate:

    1. Turn the power off. If your Nexus One is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
    2. Hold the Volume Down button
    3. Press and release the Power button
    4. You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
    5. Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
    6. Press and release the Power button
    7. Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
If you selected YES, all data including third-party applications will be deleted from the device. Once the wipe is complete, the phone will reboot to factory fresh state.

Having done that, my phone was stuck on the boot screen with the Nexus One X --> http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2009/350/c/d/Nexus_One_by_naymlezwun.png

    ^^^ kinda like that

Left it for 20-30 mins...nothing. It doesn't go away from the boot screen. Did a soft reset (holding Power, volume down and trackball together)..and nothing (back to boot screen).

After an hour I took out the battery, put it back in...nothing.
removed SD card, took out batt for 20 mins, put it back in ... nothing.

Have I bricked my phone? All I was doing was a Full Wipe.

I was soo looking fwd to jumping on the Android platform and modding my device.

Hmm, doesn't sound good - why did you select the Clear Storage option, when if your's is a rooted phone, you boot into Recovery to wipe, flash a custom rom, etc.

How had your mate "modified" the phone?

If you cannot boot the device by first holding the Trackball down, then pressing and holding the power button down to get to the Fastboot menu, you may be in trouble. Does this work at all?

    Hey, thanks for the reply.
I did not actually know what the difference is between Clear Storage or Recovery. I just read the article online for a complete wipe and followed it. All he told me he'd modified the phone. I didn't ask him many questions lol...should've asked him.
Nope, it doesn't work at all. All I've seen is the X, no matter what I do :(

Ummm... Yeah... Totally sounds bricked, I'm sending you my address now so you can send it to me so I can use it as a door-stop...

Nah though, you're fine, it's seriously hard to brick one of our phones - you almost have to try to brick one, it's that difficult! If you run into issues, just reflash and you'll be all good.

Lol..thanks for scaring the crap out of me!

Hmm...so I asked my friend and he said he has Sense UI on the phone. Plus when I went into the whole Bootrom Flashbook thingamajig...I saw the option to NAND backup, Nand backup + ext, NAND restore (there was no pre-existing restore so the option was pointless) etc. But that gives me something to ask....with Sense UI and this whole Nand option...what ROM is he running? Will you be able to tell? What other questions should I ask him so I can get exactly to the meat of the issue here?

And everytime I restart my phone, it locks up on that dastardly X boot screen. Now that I have full access to my phone...is there any step-by-step guide on how I can restore this phone to it's original form without causing havoc. I don't want to shut down the phone and restart it. It'll get locked again :(

What's the problem here? Just boot into recovery, wipe everything, and reflash the ROM. Simples.

MUCHOS GRACIAS! to ksc6000 for helping me with the issue and donating his time while I fixed my phone. It was a great learning experience for a noobie like me. I had no idea what Root is, fastboot, superboot folder...nothing. He patiently explained everything, and now I am more wiser and on the path to rooting and modding this phone with some knowledge.
And thank you all for the suggestions, the hyperlinks to useful posts and your feedback. It kept me sane and guided me to many new things about the Nexus (and android) i didn't know about.

Lol, it took me 2 hours with an expert on gchat to do that. It's easy once you know what you're doing, but for a freshie like me...it was completed uncharted waters. Great experience nonetheless, and having a working device is awesome!

Good news you got the phone restored......check out Cyanogen's ROM which I prefer to the Sense port.

Now you can learn about modding :D

It depends on what you have done - describe exactly what you have been up to with your phone.......

This forum is becoming a bit like an episode of ER

I too have the exact same issue:

I was about to buy my friends N1, after he cleared the data, it is now stuck on boot screen, he has sent this to me to try to fix since he is not a technical person at all, but I am also dumbfounded by it.

I think this n1 is factory unlocked already.

    here is what happened:

1.) He went to settings and clicked restore to factory defaults
2.) It rebooted and got stuck to this.

He send unit to me just now.
1.) Removed bat to turn off since power button no longer works to shut phone off
2.) Pressed POWER+Vol Down to enter Menu
    [IMG]
    3.) Selected Clear Storage
4.) asked to confirm, so I did, it said it will reboot in 5 seconds, so it did and still stuck with this screen.

    Alternatively,

I chose recovery, then wiped everything, reboot still the same.

Tried downloading multiple roms, renamed to update.zip, but it will give me an error in recover mode, not signed.

    This N1 is unlocked.

Now, I want to follow the instructions here but I am wondering if it is worth it or I will just return the n1.

Download this: RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting

    Rename it to passimg.zip

Now you need to use ADB to get it on the SD card, which you do in recovery.

    Code (Text):
    1. adb push passimg.zip /sdcard
Now get into the bootloader and it should detect the passimg.zip file and ask if you want to install it.

Another way would be to toggle your ms toggle on the one pic you have above and it should bring up your sd card on your pc. Then you can just copy/paste it to the sd card from your download folder. Or, use your usb cable and turn on mass storage and copy/paste there. Make sure debug is checked under phone settings. Settings/Applications/Development.

If you don't have ADB, it is hard and time consuming to set up if you never used it before.

    Good Luck,

    Ken
