How are you trying to get into download mode? What works for me is this:

Turn phone off and leave it off. Plug USB cable into phone but not computer. Hold both VOL buttons down. Plug USB cable into computer.

Where is the SDK installed you your phone? You need to use the command prompt on the computer to get to the directory with ADB. Example: cd\ C:\android-sdk-windows\tools.

Once in that directory you can use ADB. However, if Debugging is not turned on on the phone you won't be able to use ADB.

Try getting into download mode the way I described and come back with more information if you can.

I've never had to take out the battery, but I've read many posts saying that way works as well.
