I originally bought my evo about a week or two after it was released. I had HW verson #3 and a Novatech screen. From what I read on some posts I thought I had a good phone, but the truth is, it had a lot of problems. The phone was restarting every time a program accessed GPS and it had horrible battery life. I took it back to Sprint and they exchanged it for a new phone because they could not fix the restarting problem. My original phone was build date 5/20 and the new one had a build date of 5/12 -- even older than my original phone! We turned it on and instantly, the power button broke and sunk in. So they had to give me another replacement phone on the spot. This one had a build date of 6/20.

I am much happier with my 6/20 build phone. First off, the Epson screen is a lot better, now the greys are actually grey and not a weird purple. Also the GPS is fixed. One thing I wasnt expecting was the battery life improvement. It's huge. I get probably twice the battery life I used to get on my old 5/20 phone. And I'm using the same battery! I guess I am very surprised at what a difference build date has meant. The truth is I love android and I love the specs on the phone processor, screen, camera, etc, but HTC is not a great manufacturer, they seem very inconsistent with their build quality and cheap out on components. So right now I am very happy with the phone, but I'm still unimpressed with HTC.

Just curious but, what are you using as the reference for the build date? So far there is no consensus as to what date on the phone is the actual build date.

I'm not too sure going by a build date stamped on the back cover is accurate. Has anyone verified that method?

I was using the date on the back of the case -- regardless of the date on the case, the difference in build quality is shameful.

I've had my version 2 build since launch day & haven't had one problem with it. The date on the back of my cover says 5/19, but that date is probably when the cover was made, not the phone.

On my handset the date on the battery cover and the date on the handset chassis are one day off from each other.

6/25 here on my black. The bottom right corner of the screen us slightly higher than the others (a micrometer above the edge of the casing, while the other corners are barely inset), but aside from that, no problems yet.

once again proof that build dates and version types mean nothing. you could still have screen separation and other issues on any version.

    Launch day Evo here.
    Hardware Version 0002
    No Root

Date on Back cover is 4/21
Date on Chassis (Cant find it)

No where in the phones settings or information does it state build date. Or at least that i can see.

I have had no software or hardware issues with this phone at all. Its been perfect since day one.

They didn't start dating the chassis until about mid June. The chassis date stamp is located with the phone back off right above the water damage indicator and just to the right of the black vibrator motor just under the kick stand.

Launch day of Evo as well
    Hardware Version 0002
    No Root

    Back Cover Date: 4/20 (nice)

I've had no issues. No screen separation, no light leakage, no SD card issues, no faulty screen or camera, nothing. Sometimes it would freeze but I'd just restart the phone and everything would be fine. The battery sucks on mine though but thats no different than so many others out there.

Like what was said. I don't think that build date has any correlation. Probably a few faulty phones ended up going through. I think that HTC needs to tighten up their Quality Control measures and makes sure things like this don't happen. Not to mention makes better decisions like prioritizing 30 FPS on a screen that is used all the time on a phone instead of a HDMI port that some users won't even use.

I was thinking that the date on the cover meant nothing too, and probably was the date the cover was made. They are interchangable after all. The longer I think about it, the more I really do think it is the build date of the phone, because it just makes no sense to me to date every single piece of plastic like it is that important when that was made.

I agree. If you're going to take the time to stamp anything, why not stamp the phone. My belief would be that the doors are manufactured in some synchronization with the chassis and they simply stamp the cover as it would be easier. But hey... what do I know.

I bought a "certified reconditioned" EVO from Radio Shack. The guy there told me about the Novatel vs. Epson screen issue, and claimed that the reconditioned EVO had the new screen and back cover (not sure about why the cover was replaced, but he claimed that the new one was textured differently). Is any of this true? I will say my EVO looks brand new, screen is awesome, no leakage, colors look great. Also got $50 off on the refurb

If you were lucky enough to get a reconditioned Evo in great shape, and $50 off, be happy! It doesn't really matter which screen you get as long as your colors are true and the screen has a crisp image.
My first Evo had a battery door with subdued sparkles in it, and my last Evo battery door is flat velvety black, so there is a slight difference in texture.

I have no build date on my chassis. Cover date is 10-05-19 (05/19/2010), but this is my second replacement directly from HTC. There is very LITTLE leakage under each button, but only visible in a dark room.

My first replacement was due to MAJOR leakage. My second replacement, which was this past Friday, was due to LED leakage INTO my LCD. All of my HW versions were 002. This latest phone is the best one yet as far as build quality. I don't know if this one is just a recertified one or not, but my previous one that had leakage into the LCD was supposedly fresh off of the assembly line according to the person I spoke to. Build date and quality seems to be random, to me anyway.

Here's an image of the leakage into my screen for my original replacement. My 2nd replacement is fine though.

As long as it had the same warranty as a new one, I wouldn't mind either. A lot of times though, refurb items have a lesser warranty period, like 30 to 90 days.

How's the quality on your recently acquired Evo? What issue date do you have? Does it have the Froyo update?

Not sure if this is what you're looking for but here goes:

I got a new evo 5 days ago, another 6-11 stamp on the back side under the cover (not sure if anyone yet knows if that means build date)

This one of course came with 2.1 but also the OTA from before, which was odd because my first one did not. Unlike the first one this one has NO screen separation, NO light leaks, and the battery life is exactly the same or better, that is I get about 2-2.5 days light use (music on the way to work, texting, browsing, 3g always on, a couple vids, a game or so) before needing to charge. The screen also seems different. Not sure how, just more vibrant or fluid or something.
