    Hi,

I'd like to install rooted 2.2 on my Desire as per Lekky's guide, but there's a problem with BusyBox - it doesn't currently work with the Desire.

As most of the root apps seem to need BusyBox to run (including Titanium), should I just wait for a fixed version of BusyBox before trying to upgrade to 2.2, or using any other rom for that matter? Is there an alternative method I could use?

Also, my Desire is on 3UK network. Do I need to use a goldcard to upgrade to 2.2/ install another rom? I'm not clear on this bit.

    Cheers,
    Jim

? can you not flash 2.2 then use unrevoked to root?
you can then install an app version opf busybox via titanium backup if it doesnt find one for flash a custom rom that includes it

I've already rooted, but can't get Titanium backup to work. I'm worried about installing a new rom without having a backup to work with if anything goes wrong. Plus, I seem to remember reading somewhere that I'll need a goldcard as it's a branded phone.

What are you trying to backup? Your current ROM, or the apps you have installed (or both)? Titanium will only do the latter, ROMManager or nandroid in recovery will do the former.
Have you tried uninstalling Titanium, rebooting, reinstalling, opening and pressing the "problems?" button to install Busybox?
If not working, supply details of the ROM you are using, build number, radio etc, and how you have come to get where you are, and maybe things will become clearer:eek:

    Hi kboya,

    Ok, here goes:
I've rooted my 3UK branded Desire (still on stock 2.1) and created a rom backup via rom manager. I'd like to use Titanium to backup my apps before going any further, but can't run it because the current version of BusyBox is broken on the Desire.

I'd like to install either Lekky's Froyo 2.2 or OpenDesire v4.0, but am not sure whether I should without a Titanium backup and whether or not I need a goldcard anyway.

    My phone details are:
    Firmware 2.1-update1
    Build number: 1.22.771.1 CL175326 release-keys
    HBOOT: 0.83.0001
    Radio: 4.08.00.09

I've got OpenDesire v4.0 on my SD card and ROM Manager has an option to install it, but I don't know whether I'll break something by trying.

I have used ROM Manager to install ClockworkMod 2.5.0.7. Yet, If I go into the bootloader and select recovery, the phone screen goes black and stays that way. I have to remove and replace the battery to get it to boot again. I assume this is not what it should do?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Hey Jim. 1 (caveat) I have no experience of the later bootloaders after .80, and was not aware of busybox being broken (works fine on mine). I can only assume the 2 are connected.
    2. AFAIK a goldcard is only needed to root the device, and is not needed for flashing roms.
    3. Do you have an slcd screen desire? if so, check fully with other slcd threads.
    4. If not, you can use rommanager to flash the new Rom without going into recovery yourself (automatic)
    5. At the end of the day, you can always restore your device using an ruu.
apologies for the list, but I needed to order my thoughts! not sure I can be of much help, but others will be, especially now we have a better idea of your problems. Lastly, did you try the uninstall titanium and do again?
    hope you get it sorted

    Hi kboya,

Well, I managed to find guides on how to install a custom rom using just nandroid as the backup and it all went pear shaped.

I'm now in a position where my phone won't boot and I cannot get into the recovery menu to restore the nandroid backup. I've got a request for help posted in a new thread.

Thanks for your help with this though :)

    Thanks,
    Jim

    OOPS!
I ask again, do you have an SLCD screen phone? If so, try this: [SLCD-BRICK] Fix is here! - xda-developers
I think method 1 is the one for you.
    Further guides and info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682708
Hope you get it sorted. I know it is frustrating, and kinda scary considering the money for the phone, but the vast majority of people have managed to fix their phones.
    good luck

Oops is a good word for it!

I do have an SLCD screen as I found out last night when I installed an RUU designed for OLED. My screen went black and stopped working. I found that thread you mentioned and after a dozen or so failed attempts to get it going, I found a link to another RUU further in the thread that actually worked. Not only did I get the screen back and the recovery menu working again, I'm now on a debranded Desire with Froyo.

So, thanks for all the help kboya, it is appreciated. It's all good again as I'm up and running. It was a very stressful day yesterday!
