Buyer beware... EPIC GPS DOESN'T work
GPS doesn't work. I'm not sure where other people with epics with working GPS bought their phones. But I bought mines from the sprint store at 8am and GPS doesn't work at all. I keep getting "your current location is unavailable", then it says "data signal lost". I tired with with "Use wireless network" enabled and disabled.

I called sprint and they claim it "IS" a known issue. and will patch it soon. I'm getting ready to return my phone. cause is seems to be bad engineering...I heard samsung worked with apple on designing their phones too...lol

If you read my post... you can trust my post... I worked in IT for 14 years... I have a true IT background...

What apps were you testing with?

Where were you? Indoors or outdoors?

Did you try taking it for a test run using Google Navigation while driving?

Using GPS Test Plus OUTSIDE, how many sats do you see and what is the accuracy?

I would be expecting a lot more tolerance from a supposedly experienced IT person. If you really are an IT person he/she would be digging through various settings/menus testing with other devices to confirm that it isnt the phone itself.

Have you compared it with any other Epic 4Gs?

For what its worth, mine worked fine driving home yesterday using Google Navigation. I had under the Location settings both GPS satellites and wireless networks turned on.

Google maps of course. it worked with my EVO, IPHONE... etc... Location base service in browse doesn't work either...

I call sprint and they confirmed it is a known issue... so even if my testing methord is off, which they are not..., I heard straight from the source.

    It is a known issue.

LOL obvious you don't know a thing about the IT world.... When you buy somthing it is suppose to work...

What part of "Sprint told me it is a known issue", don't you understand?

If that is the case, then it is YOUR phone that doesnt work.

Why not get a replacement to see if its a lemon?

    Why give up so easily?

Something tells me your a troll.

I'd believe you if there were multiple reports of Sprint's claims from others. However, with just one instance I'd be naturally sceptical.

Hell I can claim: "I called sprint and they said the GPS works perfectly fine". Would YOU believe me if I were the only person making that claim?

The OP here did not provide many details about his testing, and his post is a little shrill. But it is news that Sprint told him there is a known issue with the GPS. I'd like to hear more details about that, too.

Also, if you read other threads on this forum, it is apparent that there are anecdotal reports of funky GPS behavior. (I haven't been able to test myself yet because I am still awaiting shipment of my Epic.) Because the GPS performance on other Galaxy S platforms is known to be defective, and the GPS issue is complex and difficulat to test, the fanboys here should be careful about their knee-jerk flaming of the OP.

I once bought a car that had the transmission go after 2 months. I didn't go online and say such a broad statement that "this manufacturer's transmissions don't work". It is either operator error or you happened to get a bad phone. Either return it, replace it, or live with it. It looks like for the majority of us, the GPS is just fine.

(Now, I think I will use my new Epic to navigate to the store and buy some diet coke.)

We should all listen to Bubba, he has a whole 16 posts of knowledge and they're all flames and rants of anti-Epic proportions.

I see what you did there. :)

Guys I would like to thank you for posting to my post... say what you want... but at least the word is getting out to the masses, if you buy an epic... you may or may not have a working GPS... operator error include... with a diet coke, and a broken transmission.

    if you what test details..

    google maps... nope
internet browser with location base services... nope
Use wireless network" enabled and disabled... nope
Called sprint... described the problem.... bypassed all the chat about all the features the epic has... and just asked why my GPS isn;t work... "sorry sir it is a known issue." Imagine a corporation willing to annouce to it's comsumers it products are faulty!!!!

    How to test gps...
Open google maps look for directions from current location (don't manually enter your location, let gps find it for you) to anyway... maybe the a local store to get a diet coke....

if you don't get a result... GPS doesn't work!!!

Apparently you haven't read or understood my posts. I have clearly said that I am withholding judgment on the GPS performance on the Epic pending further testing.

FYI, I have a lot of experience testing and discussing the GPS flaw in other Galaxy S forums at xda, where the general GPS flaws in that family are well documented. (You can search my posts there. They are public.) Registered here because I found relevant discussion. I actually have high hopes that Samsung will fix the GPS bug on the Epic, having just invested a bunch of money in it. But I am skeptical until this is proven. Right now, I have not been able to test myself while awaiting shipment, and I take all anecdotal reports with a grain of salt. But I don't discount them for emotional fanboy reasons, either.

You reply sounds reasonable... but trust me. I'm not posting because I'm bored. I decided to post because alot of the stuff posted is misleading.

I returned my EVO 2 months ago, because of the frame rate issue, then decide to wait for the Epic, because of the reviews.

I love the phone, but the GPS issue is a game breaker. I contacted sprint yesterday and their advance technical support told me it is a known issue with some of the epic phones... which is a direct contradiction of what was told to consumers though sprints official announcement.

^ Perhaps you should call again and see if they say the same thing. Or better yet, get a replacement.

Again, for what it is worth. I just went outside and tested the following with my Epic:

    In this order:
    Sprint Navigation
    Google Navigation
    Google Maps
    Google Places
Google Home Page with location turned on.

All found my location using GPS.

Did they give you any other information beside it was a known issue? Even though mine is working, I am interested to know what the details are.
