Well i got the eris and a droid for me and my girl 2 weeks ago and I turned her eris in for another droid from amazon.com... (Cant beat it for 109.00 shipped with no rebates). But I will say the eris is a good phone but not great....

we had a host of problems with it.. nothing relating to software or the android system, but I believe that in the effort to make a cheaper device HTC cheeped out on some components. Like the Bluetooth and wifi.. I had intermittent issues with them both, they would work and not work, and the wifi was hard to get functioning.

The two biggest problems though were the microphone/speaker and the radio (antenna/reciever for phone calls) They both Sucked horribly. I would always have 1 to 2 less bars then my droid, and 1x was not-uncommon to have when I had 3G on my droid..
Then the constant static and dropped calls was annoying. She did live in a far out area, and its understandable for this to happen sometimes, but there is no reason for static and for us to be talking and a whole half of the conversation be missed.. no faint or quiet, but there was just no voice passed over.. and this happened no matter where she was (Except real close to a cell tower) and with land line and cell phones.

But those things may have just been a little issue with her phone and where she lived. But the eris is a great phone and as far as the price point and competitors it is a great buy. My mom is getting a eris for free when my dad buys a moto droid tomorrow. It was reasonably fast and the touchscreen was great, sense is awesome and the android system of course was good.. it needs to be updated to 2.01 or 2.1, but it was good enough.

All in all, we are keeping the android system, just upgrading.. I love the droid and i liked the eris, but for $100 i couldnt pass up a moto droid.. for the price point of sub $80 smartphones, the eris is one phone that cant really be beat.

I have a lot of problems with my Eris and phone calls. I can hear my wife just fine, but she misses half of what I say. Its getting really annoying. I've swapped it out for another Eris, still the same issue. It really sucks, because its my only gripe with the phone.

i'm gaving some issues as well. wife hates the phone because i sound terrible. it's not all the time but enough. unfortunate because i can't swap it out now. i love everything else about the phone. hoping somehow it improves. i'm going to get a bluetooth headset and see if that helps. sound quality on my end is generally great oddly enough.

Huh that's odd, while the Eris is not perfect when I switched I had a few people comment on the quality (some saying I needed to talk softer because I was too loud) others just saying I sounded really clear the spearkerphone on the other hand not that great not bad but not great my Dare had a slightly better speakerphone.. And the short time I had my Droid I did not use the speakerphone so I can't comment .. But didnt' get any feedback on the droid call quality

The two complaints I've seen in reviews about the Droid are the fact that it slows down, "gets sluggish," after a bit of use during the day (have not seen that on my Eris.. yet) and the physical keyboard being "flimsy" and not as easy to use as the on-screen version.

I'd like to see more comparing the two in these forums, there are a few posts about it here and there.

The problem might be at the other end. Lots to look into when it comes to phone-call difficulties.

I didn't have the nerve to call the Droid "plain ugly" to a person who likes it, but I'm glad you did.

The only time I have ever had call quality problems with my Eris is when I've used bluetooth and that only happens when the battery is almost dead on my earpiece. Most of the time I actually have people asking me what a noise is in the background and then they are shocked that I am on a cell phone.

Now my BlackBerry on the other hand.......

It resembles a bit my Samsung Instinct, the old M800 version with the squared corners. I liked that feature because it was perfect for slipping it into a shirt or inside jacket pocket and not have it fall over sideways but stay in the upright position.

I handled a Droid at the store several days ago and started to like it for that reason, but the Eris won because of its overall feel in my hand as I used it for a while.

The keyboard is a lot like the Instinct's keyboard in landscape mode, so it has been an easy transition.

I didnt like Droids keyboard at all. My previous phone was LG Env 3 and Droids keyboard was worthless relating to LG. I knew i wasnt going to use it. I also didnt like the lock button at the top. Considering how big the phone is, its a little inconvenient.

Does antone else notice that the people having call issues, it's with the wife?

    :D

In my house, the wife always blames me for not listening......

Never had any complaints about call quality with my Eris, not even on speakerphone. And I HATE speakerphone!!!

    LMAO..

..well, I've seen somewhere a stat pointing out the 85% male to 15% female disparity amongst software developers. :D

I've had my eris for 2 months now and I have had no problems with sound clarity or quality, even the bluetooth works great. I think it is the perfect phone.

I've had folks tell me I'm coming very clearly on my new Eris. I wonder if your getting some kind a locale specific interference.

Ok I've had both so I'll give my2cents.. I had a LG Dare for almost 2 years, then upgraded to the Droid had it for almost a week, hated the keyboard and the feel of the phone, I also wasn't a big fan of the screens touch ability (somethign i noticed in the store before I bought the droid the eris has a better feel for me at least on the onscreen keyboard)
The droid keyboard was worthless for me so I found myself using the screen 90% of the time then I decided what the heck I'll exchange it for the Eris get $100 back (and they let me keep the 16gig card :) if I dont' like the Eris I'll go back to the Droid, that was about 2 months ago and I have not looked back..

The only thing I liked better about the Droid was it was slightly quicker , the screen wwas GORGEOUS , the video camera is better, and the biggest thing was 2.0 with google maps. When I traded for the Eris the rep said we'd get the update before 2010 . I really miss the VZ Navigator on my Dare but ohh well , the update will fix that when Iget it

....this is as it SHOULD be ;) and btw, my husband is the one who wouldn't even know how to turn my Eris on if he had to....which isn't such a bad thing now that I think about it.
