Can I use usb host on my thunderbolt without rooting?

Hi all,

I got my thunderbolt yesterday and I also have a xoom. I read that there are ways to enable usb host on the xoom by rooting the OS, but is there a way to use an external harddrive on my phone or tab without rooting?

If yes, please list all available solutions

If no, why is there no app that enables this function? Is it hard to enable usb hosting?

No.

Superuser access is required, that's the only way to get it to work.

There is no way to legitimately give superuser access in-order to enable usb hosting? Seems like a very good function to have on phones/tablets.
Are there any hints from Google that this functionality will be enabled in future android releases?

That's what rooting does.

Its always possible. Most android phones had wifi tether locked until froyo.
