I am new to Android systems, but so far I like what I see with my EVO.

I just miss one thing from my Insinct.

It was setup to notify me as soon as I received a new Email. I work in an industry where prompt replies are imperitive. If I take more than two hours to respond, that can mean the loss of a VERY large order.

My Instinct would notify me within 5 minutes of a new email by playing a ringtone, vibrating, and the screen coming alive.

The EVO only acknowledges a new email when I open that screen and it refreshes.

I tried enabling notifications, and checking for new email every 15 minutes. And it does notify me of new email, but as I said, only when I open the screen.

Is there an app that will actually look for new email at specified intervals and alert me?

im guessing you are using the standard mail app instead of gmail. the only way to get push email (instant notification) is to use gmail, or an exchange server. otherwise you will have to resort to the polling every few minutes. be advised, that uses a lot of the battery.

I was wondering if it can do the same for SMS? I'm coming from a Pre and I did like how when you got an SMS the screen would light up and you would see the notification at the bottom and a preview of the message..and the screen would turn off a few secs later.. would love it if the Evo is capable of doing this. I keep checking the settings to see if I missed anything but no dice. Anyone know if this is possible?

Try using Handcent to replace the stock messaging app. You can do all that you listed above and more.

Currently not available on the market due to a problem, download here News & Events

Just make sure to disable notifications on the stock messaging app, else you will get two icons. Menu-Messages-Settings-Received messages. - Uncheck notification upon received messages.

There is also an app called "SMS Popup" that does the same thing. I installed it last night, works great. Only thing is that if you want to reply, you still have to go through the effort of turning your screen back on the conventional way.

I am using the gmail client and it seems that my pop email notifies me right away but my gmail only tells me I have a new email when I hit refresh. I see no option to adjust the settings so that I can get them asap. Any ideas??

    Menu > Accounts & Sync > {check the auto sync box}
Make sure your gmail account is included below.

Also, if you are using a task killer, make sure you don't kill any gmail tasks.

I use the gmail app for my google mail account and email app for my work Exchange Active Sync. Both give me notifications immediately when I receive any mail in either system. I use them with default configuration.

Sms also notified me immediately when any message us received. I know because my wife has sent me messages while in the other room and I got the notifications as soon as she finished sending.

Of course I don't care much about visual Notifications since I can't sit and stare at my phone all day. I hear the notification, and the message is there.

Great suggestions, I tried them and both work great as expected. Can we do the same thing for Emails? When I get a new email notification the screen would light up?

I enjoyed the flashing button Palm added late in the game to the Pre. I know the evo flashes a green light in the speaker at the top of the phone but due to battery life, my phone is plugged in at least 50% of the day. It's pretty lame that you can't see any new message notifications while the phone is plugged in.

Agreed! There needs to be an app made for notifications while plugged in.

I love the features of my EVO, I'm in Real Estate and I depend heavily of my emails (alerts). I switched from a blackberry and I'm use to being notified immediately. It would also allow you to set a ringtone for each email provider like yahoo, aol, gmail and so on. This was very helpful, because of the tone, I would jump up and grad the phone or forget it about it.

I'm very disappointed with this phone, with all the technology that's available, it doesn't have this simple feature. Also the response time of a sent email is very poor. It takes way to long to receive an email.

Try "Missed Reminder" - can set ringtone, screen light-up, etc. Some have said that it doesn't work well with Gmail but it seems to work for me. Much better than the stock reminders/notifications

Missed Reminder - Android app on AppBrain
