Help CANNOT take photos or write files on SD card

I have a August 2014 Moto G (4.4.4) with an external SD card. When I first got the phone, I used Andriod File transfer to move files into my SD card with my laptop. Now I am unable to create new folders or even take pictures to the SD. It turns black after I take the photo and it says it was taken on 31 Dec 1969, the default. I can't move apps to SD either, does this mean I need a new SD card? I don't think it's because of the 4.4.4 version, because it just all of a sudden stopped working. I did not update the phone either, so it could be the damage on the card. Do you suggest getting a new one to solve the problem?
