Can't shut off gmail notifications in 4.4

I am being driven crazy by updates from gmail, specifically youtube. I have followed the directions about unchecking the notifications box and every other suggestion that I can find that will work on my phone, most won't. I recently switched to Straight Talk and bought an LG Access Lte. It's not a top of the line phone, but it is still an Android 4.4. I should have stayed with Verizon. The never ending headaches with Straight Talk aren't worth it.
