    Case Study: Brightness, Widgets and Live Wallpaper Battery Usage, for rooted and unrooted alike :)

    Serious time taken. Please be real serious and leave a deadly serious reply in all seriousness... I need sleep :p

    Mission: Test mA power draw of brightness, widgets and live wallpapers on panels.

    How was it done?
    Test device setup; Desire S ICS 4.0.4, Sense 3.6, 14.01.401.2 710RD. HTCdev with 4EXT Recovery & SuperSU. A few system apps had been removed.
    Cool Tool v3.45; Enable Battery mA Label and CPU Frequency Label, disable other labels, disable all Gauges and Draw Chart set to 'None'.
    Default baseline; Auto-Sync is 'Off'. Sleep is 'Never turn off'. Mobile Network is 'Off'. WiFi is 'On'. Brightness is 'Medium' (set via widget).
    CPU is set to '1.024GHz' for min and max, using No-frills CPU Control. Governor 'ondemand\default' and I/O scheduler 'deadline\default'.
    *Remove previous test (clear panels etc.)
    Cache cleared with ES Task Manager.
    All tasks, excluding No-frills CPU Control and Cool Tool, were killed with ATK ('Build Recommended Ignore List' was executed before this). To prevent unforeseen CPU usage, I wanted to clear the playing field as much as possible.
    *The following apps in memory restarted after the kill, some instantly, others overtime. Added these to ignore list to prevent auto-start after their kill and possible CPU usage due to that (this is why task killers aren't always a good thing):

    • AntiVirus (AVG)
    • Calendar
    • Clock
    • Dock Mode
    • Facebook
    • Google Search
    • Maps
    • My Tracks
    • News
    • Personalize
    • Talk
    • Tasks
    Really, all that should have to be killed is previous apps or widgets that were tested.
    CPU Memory Monitor was used to check if any apps beyond system were using CPU Cycles. If they were, they were hunted down and killed.
    ATK run again to kill the above CPU Memory Monitor and itself.
    Hopefully Cool Tool and No-frills CPU Control are the only apps running that may use CPU cycles. Hopefully they don't impact on the tests with variance in CPU usage.
    Line up the test.
    Once test is lined up, one minute is given before proceeding. A reading is taken every 30 seconds over 5 minutes.
    Battery level was kept above 40%, recharging between tests if needed.

    ... Test aborted. There is no difference having multiple panels to only one. My first mA read told me that, and I had thought it would be the case beforehand.

    Static & Live difference (hrs): 9.36-5.11 = 4.25 hour
    Static & Live difference (%): 45.4% more mA draw over static

    Test #05B

    Static Wallpaper: 1450/155 = 9.36 hours
    Live Wallpaper: 1450/338 = 4.29 hours
    Static & Live difference (hrs): 9.36-4.29 = 5.07 hour
    Static & Live difference (%): 54.2% more mA draw over static
