Was anyone able to fit their X with a case on into the Motorola car dock? The dock comes in with a removable bracket inside, that makes the grip a little wider.

Stock X fits inside with the bracket in. So, I assume you remove the bracket to fit X without taking it out of the case. Unfortunately none of the cases that my local Verizon store had worked.

I have a gel case (got it for free, can't complain), and the phone won't fit into the cradle with it. Sales rep also tried hard case (two parts that lock together, and give you a rubberized feel on the outside), and it's no go either.

Which case did they make the cradle for? Unfortunately the manual does not mention anything specific.

    Thanks.

Bumping this thread as i'm interested in this as well... hopefully we can get somewhat of a comprehensive list of cases that are compatible with the car dock (sans the insert) and get this thread sticky'd

I am currently using the holster that the phone clips into and no case for the same reason. I couldn't find any case that fit. The drop in leather cases have magnets in them and I am afraid it will activate car dock mode.

Here is what I did, ymmv. First remove the insert piece from the dock and discard. remove the for screws that hold the dock together and remove the front piece. there is a little nub at the bottom of the right hand side, dremel it off. It is hard to get the area where the nub was to look good, but you can't see it when the phone is in any way. Next get some popsicle sticks and stack them together. Five or six should do, maybe. What I did was put them in the bottom of the dock so that they fit real tight between the front and back. Only one side at a time mind you. Now get something like a small screwdriver out more popsicle sticks that you can use as wedges to provide more pressure against the little flange on the bottom corners of the dock. Turn on your propane torch to a low flame and carefully heat the flange on one side of the dock until it becomes pliable. Apply pressure with your wedges to push the flange put until the phone case will fit. Do this for both sides. The plastic well become shiny where the heat was, so you well need to spray the front with some plastic wrinkle finish to make it look uniform again. My attempt at this turned out so so. If I did it again it would probably be better. But it works great now and sometimes I have to choose function over form. I will try to post some pics later if anyone is interested.

LMFAO!!! I read that post, then saw your reply and I literally just lost it. I actually think my face looked like that after I read it.

Nothing against the poster who modded his dock, mind you. I'm all for creative modding. But that looks like a lot of work for someone just looking for a case that fits the dock. :p

Yeah, that's a bit too much effort I'm willing to go through. Besides, as posted in another thread, there's Tetrax Xway which I think would work just fine for my needs - I don't want a suction cup to take videos on the road, and, in fact, prefer a clear windshield screen.

I think I will go with that.

Cant you just dremel out the little plastic nub in the back right? It seems that it is the only thing stopping cases from fitting in the mount

There's also the Soundgate M2 which works well:
    http://www.wiredforless.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SOUNDM2&CartID=1

Use code WOOT at checkout to get it for $5 + shipping.

Then there is also the Clingo Car Mount:
Clingo Universal Vent Mount - securely holds mobile devices

That attached to the vent. Supposedly leaves no residue on the phone and works well. Thread about it here over on the Incredible Forum:
    http://androidforums.com/accessories-incredible/114860-anyone-recommend-clingo-car-mount.html

What's nice about it is that you don't need to attach anything to the back of your phone or case. I currently have the M2 mount and like it, but am considering checking out the Clingo since I've gotten used to carrying my phone without a case recently.

I like the the fact that I can just drop it in the dock and out is charging. The dock allows me to hard wire the connection so I don't have annoying wires hanging. Except for the audio patch cable, but that will be gone when I get a receiver with bluetooth. I also worry about the potential for condensation or extreme temperatures near the vent.

That may depend on the case. I have the fat kickstand one from verizon.

I guess i was actually wondering IF you can dremel it out, as in to fit the rubber case that Verizon offers (and the one that i use).

Yes you can dremel it off. There is nothing important underneath it. Like I mentioned above, the only difficulty is making it look good. I suspect better results might be obtained using something like a hot razor blade.

I'm looking for the protective case that is mentioned on the instruction manual of the car dock. Check out step 1: Hopefully Motorola releases this:

    That frackin car dock.

I just put the clear-bra-like protector from SGP on my pone, and even that is too thick for the car dock with the insert, and without the insert the phone flops around. I have hopes that the Seidio Inocase will be thin enough to work without the insert. My boss has it on his Droid and its seems really nice, and thin.

Innocase Surface for use with Motorola Droid X

Otherwise I'm gonna end up with one of those universal "Clamping" style car mounts.

this is really f'ing ridiculous. Can't some manufacturer wake up and smell the opportunity to make the most in demand accessory compatible with the dock of the most hyped phone on the market since the iphone

The soft black silicone case that VZW sells seems to fit fine in my cardock with the insert removed.

I cut the little nub out of the car dock, and the rocketfish case fits perfectly. I'm thinking those gel cases from verizon would easily fit as well.

Actually, there's two, one on the right and left sides. Grind them down smooth.

I have the Verizon silicone case, which did NOT fit at all with the insert removed.

I used a heat gun to gently heat the two front corner and edges (separately), then used the actual Droid in the silicon case to push the edges and corners out enough that the whole thing sat squarely in the bottom of the holder.
Hit the piece with some flat black, and it looks great.

And for all you "OMG, complicated" types, leave the sweet smell of success to those of us who do something with our hands besides playing WOW. Watch a few Old Spice commercials for tips on how to man-up. :D

I'll be giving this a try after my new case comes this week. I'll try the heat gun technique first, then a torch if need be. Great concept!!

I'll try to remember to take some pictures (and post 'em).

For the record, I have the SEIDEO MTDX Case (the thin one) and I was looking for a solution to the car dock issue when I stumbled on this forum...

I did exactly this.. I pulled the insert out of the Car Dock ... Took the heat gun and heated up the lower portion of the Car Dock.. Inserted my phone with the case on it, and it molded itself right into the dock! Had to do it 2 times with it to get a really good fit.

This method WORKED LIKE A CHARM!! Excellent idea. Looks stock, fits snug. Even with the insert back installed into the Car Dock you cannot tell. Took all of 10 mins. ;)

So there ya have it folks. Get the SEIDEO Case and apply a little heat. wala! :D
