I was able to change the boot animation before Froyu using the procedure at http://androidforums.com/tips-tricks-evo-4g/109120-how-install-new-boot-animation-without-root.html .

After Froyo, I've tried to push the zip file as VZW_bootanimation.zip and bootanimation.zip to both /data/local and /system/customize/resource (I can't write to that location, I think it's for rooted phones only). None of these four options worked.

What am I missing? That native boot animation is nasty.

    Thanks in advance.

you need root. the place the files need to be going is /system/customize/resource. this is the first place that the OS looks for the boot animation. other locations are backups.
also, file should just be named bootanimation.zip. no need for VZW.

just root your phone dude, it's not hard lol

    MrVirginia,

Greetings from NC that vale of humility between two mountains of conceit ;) .

Root? I believe I shall. May I ask what's your preferred setup/image/so forth?
