Change favorites display

How can I change the way my favorites are displayed under the "phone" app? I hate the large squares with pictures that I can't sync to FB or other content provider. I have blank squares that make it difficult to find the person's name buried in the square. I've looked everywhere.

Using a third party dialer app is the only way I can think of. Or choosing images manually (even creating ones with people's initials).

That said, some of my contacts do have images that are synced from outside: a couple of people who have set up G+ profiles have images that come from there, as do some Skype contacts. I don't know about FB because I don't have that app installed.
