I have a Droid Incredible and some conversations are taking a while to open because of the amount of texts in the conversation. Is there any way to change how many texts to display so it speeds up without having to delete the texts? (I like being able to go back to past conversations so I'd prefer not to delete any)

    Thanks!

i, like you, horde messages too ... it was a big problem on my previous phone (had to try to export a few once i got to the 3000+ mark)

when i got my desire, i looked around for a way to back up the messages and stumbled upon this:
SMS Backup - Android app on AppBrain

it synchronizes with gmail in the background and uploads my sms to a specific folder, and so now i think nothing of deleting messages on my phone.

hope this helps in some way!

Alright thanks for the replies guys! I'll check it out.

Was kind of hoping there'd be some way to just create a new convo on the phone but this won't be too bad either I suppose!

Ok for SMS Backup, how do I get Gmail to label who the conversation is with? It only says me, *phone number for person*. Can I have the phone number be converted to a name automatically somehow?

Also can I get more than 100 messages per "conversation" from Gmail? Currently I have 4 different "conversations" for the same person. Can I aggregate them all?

    Thanks!

    questions i'd like answered myself!

for the first question, i'm getting the same problem ... i tried to find a way around it, but in the end i left it as is since it's a backup and i can always do a search if i need to. i did go to the dev website and have a look around, and someone has already posted it as an issue.

For the second question, I had a look and it seems to be a GMail limitation, see here (especially last paragraph)
    Conversations - Gmail Help
Mine is only up to at most 43 so far, but it's nice to know it tacks them on at the end of a conversation between different backups rather than a new one per backup.

Ok I think I've got all my problems sorted out, but had to use the app SMS Backup & Restore.

It makes it so backups are stored on your SD Card, and you can view each backup by contact and it threads it all. Only problem I have here that it is obviously segmented backup, so I'll probably use a combo of both (still would be great if I could have SMS Backup rename the number to the person's contact name).

SMS Backup & Restore can also e-mail the backup which can be opened in a browser which is nice too.
