Charge the Hero while it's off?

I generally turn off my cell phone at night and charge it, just a habit I've developed over the years. I recently got a Hero and noticed some inconsistent behavior.

I turn my phone off and then I plug it into the wall charger. I've noticed that after I plug in my phone, it *sometimes* powers on and boots up. Other times, it stays off and just charges.

    Is this normal?

That does seems strange. I, myself leave my phone on all the time so have not noticed this. Not to sound rude, but are you sure that you didn't accidentally turn the phone on while you plugged it in.

Why don't you plug it in first then turn it off and see what it does.

Haha, I generally am half asleep when doing this. But I'm fairly confident I'm not hitting any buttons. I'll play around with it some more and see what happens. I just wanted to know if other people have experienced the same thing. Thanks!

I've never actually tried it with this device but if I recall most previous HTC devices I have had can do this.

I too turn off my Hero and then plug in the charger. It has never auto started at that point. Just make sure its completely shut down b4 you plug in the charger.

What I've noticed in regards to charging with the phone off is that it shows about 95% charge after booting up. I have allowed it to charge to 100% and then turned off and back on and the phone still shows 100% so its definitely not charging to max capacity if doing it with the phone off and waiting till the led turns green.

The boot cycle can knock some of the battery capacity down in my experience. I recommend leaving it on the charger, booting the phone, then disconnecting the charger as soon as it is booted and goes back to sleep.

Below are some links to other threads that offer some decent tips on best practices and aftermarket higher capacity batteries for the Sprint Hero.

Hmm, it still happens periodically. I power down the phone, wait for a few seconds after the screen goes black, and then plug it in to the wall charger. As soon as I plug it in, it boots up. We have three other Heros in the family and mine is the only one that does it. It's kind of annoying. I may think about exchanging it for a new one since it's still pretty much brand new.

No insult meant, and this is probably silly, but are you sure you are powering down the phone, and not just turning off the screen? It takes a long press on the red power button then a couple of additional "clicks" to actually power it off. Again, just checking.

    No offense taken!

Yep, I hold down the power button, and then choose "power off", and then confirm the selection. Once the phone is off, I plug it in, and then the phone turns on and goes through the boot sequence. It's annoying because even if the phone is on "silent mode", it still makes noise during the boot sequence.

Seriously, I must be going crazy or something, it's really strange. It doesn't always happen, just sometimes. And I'm extremely careful about not hitting any buttons.

I do exactly the same thing...and both of our Heros DO NOT power themselves back up until/unless I press the red POWER button.

Take the phone to your dealer, demonstrate the problem and request they fix it or replace it.

Just now, I turned my phone off and plugged it into the charger. It started charging exactly as I would expect. I unplugged it and plugged it back in a few times. On the 5th time, it booted up on its own.

The usb jack has a little play in it (unless the cable isn't fitting tightly), is that normal?

Thanks for the help, I am going to try for a replacement.

I don't think you have to get it replaced. Mine does this too. You have to wait until the phone is completely off before you plug the power cord in. If you plug it in too soon, it will turn back on.

    Well that's good to know.

Any thoughts about my post above though? I tried plugging it in and unplugging it, and it turned on after the 5th time. The phone was definitely powered off at that point.

I dunno, it's just strange, and annoying.

My Hero does this as well. But it didn't start doing it until I started using a PowerMat with it. If I place the power cube on the mat, remove quickly and put it back on the mat, all within a matter of seconds, the phone will turn itself back on each time. Never saw it with the stock charger though. Maybe it has something to do with receiving multiple power signals on the USB in a short period of time.
