sometimes i get a checkmark symbol right under the 3G or E on my Aria.

i think it usually happens when i am connected to wi-fi, but there is no symbol like that in the manual saying what it is.

if it's just for wi-fi, then thats kind of redundant since the wi-fi signal/symbol lets me know that

I assumed it meant all data was off since it also appears when I toggle the Mobile widget.

I believe it just means that you're connected to 3G but the data connection is idle.

That was my assumption anyway. After playing with it for a moment I think wyountrx is right.

This is my first android phone too. I found Advanced task killer, Astro file manager, and 3g watchdog to be essential.

Advanced app killer lets you easily shut down any open apps. Astro file lets you view and manage files obviously, and 3g watchdog keeps trak of your data usage in case your worried about overages. I'm on the 200 mb package so I'm keeping a close eye on it.

Other things to make your life easier:
Make use of the voice feature when typing messages. the keyboar on aria is a bit cramped so its much easier to just say it, and it works very well.

Also, no where in the directions do they tell you that if you long press items often a menu will pop up, or you will be able to move/remove them(like widgets on home screen)
