I never dealt with the 2.1 OTA so I wouldn't know, but can't you use this method?

If your on the STOCK OTA update then you can't root it, now if you used the ESE81 W/ Root then.....you already have root. Also it should

    chmod 6755 /system/bin/su

    Try doing this first

    mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system

If it still doesn't work then you probably aren't rooted in which case you need to get handy with RSD Lite.

I'm following the instructions at this http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/63010-how-install-sprecovery-unrooted-2-1-ota.html I have stock android with srecovery. I dont want to load a custom rom because they just give me the worst battery life ever. I just want to overlock. There is a guide at the bottom of the OP that shows adb commands and a download link.

    Heres what i do
    cd\
    cd androidsdk\tools\
    adb push su /system/bin/su
    adb shell "/system/bin/chmod 6755 /system/bin/su"
    /system/bin/chmod: permission denied

Did you mount system as read/write like CRP said? Are you doing it with SPRecovery per the instructions?

Yeah you have to use the command from the shell (which is basically emulating a terminal on the Droid itself)

    Try this:
    Code (Text):
    1. adb shell "mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system"
    2.

just to verify...you booted into SPRecovery by holding x, and mounted /system before you do anything?

Something isn't right....I would just get the stock ESE81 ROM with root already added in and flash that.
