Complete ignorance

I have at 66 just bought my first mobile phone, a HUAWEI U8150 IDEOS.
I finally worked out how to turn it on but I cannot get past the opening screen which has the time, a menue bar at the top, and the ability to lock/unlock and turn the sound on/off.
Swiping up/dawn etc, touching the screen anywhere, pressing every acail able button etc has got me nowhere!
HELP please

Touch and hold the padlock icon on the screen and drag it to the right.
This will unlock the phone.
