You might clarify on how you connect to the Internet.
Do you use Wifi or 3G/HSPA or both???

I've found that orange mobile internet can be very patchy at times when I'm out and about. Sometimes the 3g network is basically unusable. Other times it is fine.

My home WiFi with BT is rock solid and the Desire works very reliably with it.

Do you know the quality of your WiFi signal? There are apps that can show you the signal strength. Does your WiFi work reliably with other devices? Does a rock solid site like Google give many timeouts?

If you can rule out these problems I would try a factory reset to make sure that your software is in a known state. If you have no joy after that, it's time to get a replacement phone.

I also found that my orange mobile internet is useless, Can't seem to connect anywhere in my area. My wi-fi is fine though.

I have had the same issues with wifi, dropping/locking up, returned the phone 2 weeks ago for testing, still not back ! latest update is it will be back Tuesday but they could not find any issue with it, everything else works on my wireless here but the Desire must be super sensative i think, next step for me will be to change my router and go from there.

This is Vodafone Ireland by the way.

I'm also on O2 . Never had any problems though.
Are you on payandgo or contract? Did you check your APN?

For the wifi, I'm not quite sure. It works fine with mine and i'm on O2 too
