Constantly charging Evo throughout the day

I am getting 9-10 hours off a nightly charge on my Evo. This isn't lasting me the whole day and I usually run out of juice on the drive home from work. I've tried all the battery tricks to get longer time but no luck. I think the reason for the battery drain is because at work, I only receive 1-2 bars on the 3G network. When I step outside, I go to 4-5 bars. I am blaming the battery drain more on my location rather than the phone, which is OK.

Anyways, I have the luxury of sitting in front of a laptop all day. This means I can constantly charge my Evo all day through the USB port. Would this have any bad effect on the battery? This means taking the phone on and off the charge throughout the day. If I leave my desk for 10-15 minutes, I'm unplugging the Evo and taking it with me. This could happen 5-10 times a day.

Or is it better just to do a charge 1-2 hours before I leave work to make sure it will last the remainder of the evening?

I believe I heard it is recommended we keep our EVOs charged somewhere between 40% and 80% at all times.
I do the same thing as you and charge the EVO few times through the day especially now with the World Cup watching ESPN Mobile on 4G - the most battery draining activity I found (I leave it plugged in while watching and after until it's full)

for the record, I do not have battery problems like others have and my phone will last over 24 hours on a charge when used moderately.

To the OP. With modern batteries, your phone will love you for doing what you are doing.

I run mine from 6 AM to noon on the overnight charge... Toss it on the charger for about an hour and then back in the car on the way home (30 min) and it goes the evening with no problems (usually about 11 PM it goes yellow)...

Is there an app around that can make a sound when the phone is finished charging???

You won't hurt anything but all rechargeables have an expected charge/discharge cycle that diminishes over time. I would only make a change when you think it's necessary but would estimate that even with 2-3 charges per day the battery should last 1-2 years before performance diminishes noticeably. Even when performance diminishes, it usually remains at or above 80% efficiency for at least a few years. I haven't looked up the battery cycle, but about 1000-1500 recharges until noticeable difference is a common standard.

Try this, tip from another thread.. worked wonders for my battery life-

press HOME, and bring up the dialer. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (Do not press "Call"). After a second, it should bring up the "Testing" menu.

Go into Phone Information, press MENU, and tap "select radio band." You should experience a Force Close, don't panic, this was supposed to happen. Scrolling down shows that the preferred network type is GSM auto (prl).

What this means is that even though you are connected to a CDMA network, your phone is trying to find a GSM network, preventing the radio from sleeping, and causing excessive battery drain.

Remedy this by tapping GSM auto (prl), and changing it to CDMA auto (prl).

Now your done, your TWS should drop dramatically, and you should experience much better battery life!

I did this but now when I make a call I loose my 3 g bars. When I end the call the 3 g bars come right back. Is this normal? Im at work and always have full 3 g bars.

Not sure, I have not had any performance issues but then again it's only been a day.

Is this something that needs to be done every time I reboot?
  13. You are aware they make extended life batteries you can easily buy online right? I have an 1800mah and my stock battery plus a car charger. I never worry about battery life.

We have two Evos in my house. The first 3 or 4 times we rebooted our phones we had to redo this. Ultimately, on about the 3rd to 5th time it sticks so you don't have to do this. At least that was our experience.

I tried Aehs01's suggestion, but my phone was already set to that.

I charge it all night (and keep a charger at my desk at work) and I am very very light usage. I send some texts here and there through the day, and maybe a call or two... but it's not much. I have my screen brightness turned down, 3G, Bluetooth, Hotspot and GPS are all turned off. I use ATK to make sure I don't have anything running in the background... and it's still DEAD by 4:30 (without a midday charge, from 7:30 AM) I don't understand why I have such poor results....

Umm. Have you ever read forum?? Uninstall ATK. Problem solved

    ATK IS your issue.

Yes, that is normal -- sprint's 3g internet can not be used whilst on a call.

Well, I've spent a long time poring over the battery forums, and it is not clear at all that Advanced Task Killer is a problem or a solution.

Has this actually been decided? I've already done all the other stuff (e.g. disable auto-updates for most apps, CDMA auto prl).

How should I say this and not step on toes. Yes, for people that know, it has been decided.

All I will say more is this. Before those threads started, I used ATK on my Hero. After reading everything, I yanked it out. My phone imidately got better and battaty lasted twice as long.

Trust us enough to at least try for yourself. Yank it out. You can always reinstall later. But look at the people saying is bad. Those are all the people who long ago proved here they know what is.

So again. Trust us at least enough to try and see if it resolves your problems. I have none. I don't run ATK.

Don't know what to tell the OP. I'm on hour number 27 with moderate usage, and 34% battery life left.

Like the OP, I can and do charge my EVO at my desk because I get 1-2 bars at my desk and yes, it devours battery power. But I've been noticing that after a while, the charging stops and despite being plugged in, no charging is taking place and indeed the battery is running on it's own and then it'll start to recharge again. Just wish I knew the parameters for this behavior.

Anyone else seeing this? I know it's happening because the first time I saw this, I checked all the connections to teh charger thinking I had disconnected something and no, everything was fine. It was the phone that had stopped charging.

How do you know the phone stop charging, by the blinking lights or by going into the battery status menu?
  23. jmcging

    jmcging Active Member

By looking at it. The battery stops showing the lightning bolt charge indicator in the green battery and the visual goes from clearly 100% full to something less.

Tried this, didn't help. My cell standby did drastically decrease after.

    I updated PRL, no help.

I also reformatted my SD card, no help.

I have never installed ATK or any type of task killer.

I did hard reset the phone once immediately after getting it.

I'm not complaining about the battery life. I have the resources to charge all day. I was just curious to know if it would be bad on the phone or not.

    I have hardware 003 btw.

So I uninstalled ATK, and it definitely seems to have helped. The second half of the day yesterday, after uninstalling, the battery drained less quickly. Today, it is definitely lasting longer than ever; after 7 hours it's at 70%, with light usage.

I'm surprised ATK makes a difference; I imagined it runs only on a callback basis (i.e. only when you shut off the screen, or every hour or so depending on how you configure it), not all the time. But the difference is noticeable.

    Thanks again!
