I had the droid Eris before the N1 and on the Eris it had sliding tabs at the bottom with current phone log for the contact, messages, photo albums from facebook, etc.. was this part of 1.5 android? Why would they get rid of it in 2.1?

I think that is part of the sense UI overlay and not stock Android.

Yes; that is part of HTC Sense UI, which is on heros other htc branded phones. Nexus is pure android ergo does not have the htc specific sense ui stuff.

As said above, that was part of the Sense UI skin that HTC layered on top of native Android. As you have grown has used to Sense UI, you are now introduced to the blandness that is native Android OS. Welcome!

The reason HTC did not include Sense UI on this phone is because it represents the PURE GOOGLE EXPERIENCE. And as you can tell, that experience sucks pretty hard. Functional, not pretty or intuitive, but functional. You're going to have to wait until HTC releases their own HTC branded "with Google" phone that'll have Sense mated to it -- if they can get it to work.
