With the 2.1 update hitting Droid's everywhere, I'm having a hard time justifying rooting to people who aren't already. Pinch to zoom seemed to be the biggest thing because it was so tactile and obvious from the get-go. Live wallpapers, while gimmicky, are always fun to show off. But really, the only thing I can really have an argument for is the wifi tether. Extra home screens doesn't really get people motivated, I've found, and overclocking really only gives nerds and undercover nerds like myself motivation to root. I'm also aware that rooting from 2.1 will take a little while to figure out, but that's not much of an argument either since they don't understand what they're missing in the first place.

    So, really...why?

    1) Overclock. Who doesn't like a pocket heater?
    2) Wifi tether (not that USB crap on the market)
    3) Themes (still a pain in the ass for some users)

    The list is dwindling.

    Add - superior backup options
    Add - easy screen captures
Add - ability to fine tune MY device the way I want to
Add - fun playing with new innovations that come out almost daily without relying on corporate scheduled (usually delayed) releases of upgrades
    Add - cross platform technology
Add - having choices otherwise not available
Correction - overclocked and running cooler than when it was stock (oh, and with longer battery life)
Correction - more screens that do motivate (able to run full screen twitter, email, music and other widgets with room to spare)

I could go on but it has been a long day (what is "convinging"???)...

I'm pretty sure the overclocking thing is a bigger deal than you make it out to be. I know running a 2.1 rom with the live wallpapers and lots of widgets and launcher2 is pretty laggy if you don't do it.

First reports of the 2.1 update are that it might be a bit laggy as well.

i try to format my conversation to what will be best for the user. if they want it faster, tell them over clocking. if they want more space, more screens etc etc

Tell them that your sorry you ever rooted and you wish knew how to go back to stock...end conversation :) Really, if they want to run stock...who cares. The beauty of it is, they don't need to justify to you why they are running an "official" ROM and you don't have to explain why you are smarter than they are :D

I really dont see a reason to convince people to root. If someone asks my opinion I will tell them why rooting is better though.

A friend of mine is getting a Droid and he has never owned a smartphone before. I was showing him all the stuff I can do to my rooted Droid and besides WiFi Tethering he didn't seem to care one bit or really understand what I was saying. In that case I say who cares right? Really what is the big deal, I'm not gonna convince someone to root. I will show them what you can do and if they decide they want to root then I will help but if they are happy with the device the way it is then why try to push them to rooting?

This needs to be quoted for truth! Most of my friends arent closet geeks like I am and don't see the benefit or don't even care when I'm gushing about things I can do on my rooted Droid. I'm tired of trying to explain what I've done so I just quietly sit there with a faster and more capable phone than them and smile to myself... :)
