I am trying to copy some text from within an email (either gmail or yahoo) to paste to my notepad. This is using Sprint's htc Hero. I cannot seem to do it. If I longpress the screen, it comes up with a "copy text" option and then I can drag my finger to copy some text, but only within that one screen and only a few lines before it tells me that the text has been copied to clipboard. If the text I want to copy is more than one screen, then it is impossible. I have read threads and suggestions that you use shift and s etc., but don't see how that's possible because if I'm reading my gmail, there is no keyboard to use, and no options for a "shift" key. Anyone got any ideas? I'm actually starting to panic - the more I research it, the more I see people saying it can't be done. Not with the htc hero. Please, someone - PLEASE tell me I'm wrong! This would take the Herofrom a 9 out of 10 to a 1 out of 10 because it's such a basic option. I'm sure someone will tell me quickly that I AM wrong and how to do it, so I wait in hope....

    This is what I did:

    1. Open a gmail email in gmail app
    2. Press Menu > More > Select text
    3. You will now get an arrow cursor
    4. Use the trackball then position at the start of where you want to copy
    5. Press the trackball down (it is now in copy mode)
    6. Use the trackball and scroll down (be sure not to press it)
    7. Once at the end of the text you want to copy: Press the trackball button

You will noticed that it will keep going through multiple pages. Remember that we have that awesome trackball.

Hi there: Thanks for the response. Doesn't seem to work for me.
If I open an email in the Gmail app and press "More", I only get "mute" and "report spam" as my only two options.
If I open my gmail in the regular mail app, and press Menu, all I get are the options for Received, See Conversation, Compose, Mark Unread, Delete or Forward.

So I don't know where I am going wrong with this? Any ideas?
    Thank you,

No, I'm not rooted. Just regular good old Android 2.1 that came with the phone.

the copy feature mentioned by treborcj does NOT work on phone either. no copy option pressing the menu botton.

i the phones email i get a copy function by touch and hold above where you wish to begin the copy. a copy option will pop up. then you move the arrow to where you want start and push and release the trackball to set the beginning of the copy, the use the trackball to copy the section and then press and release the trackball again to end the copy.

the problem is, the trackball is very unresponsive. you spin it like crazy to get it to move and if you push just a little to hard it ends the copy right there.

it is near impossible to use.

i guess the fact this got so few replies is that people know this is a problem that there's not answer to.

in other words, yet another major design flaw in the phone.

I AM rooted but also only get "mute" and "report spam" as my only two options from MENU>MORE in Gmail.

Copy Paste It for Root Users Ver. 1.12.
I've just downloaded the free trial version (you get 10 free uses of "copy") of an app that does copy/paste universally across all apps in the phone by using OCR.

Note that it is for ROOTED phones.

I haven't really tried it myself yet (I'm reluctant to burn up the 10 free uses) but the review in the link seems to put it to the test, even pulling text from a graphic. The price has gone from a steep $3.99 to an even less enticing $6.99. Yes, it irks me to pay so much for an app simply to get a feature that should be native in Gmail but if I find through the free trial that it works smoothly and accurately, I guess that (for the time being) I'll have no choice but to cough up the coin.

Note: the scan code in the review takes you to the full version ($6.99). Do a search in the Android Market for "Copy Paste It" and you'll find the free Trial version.

    Again, this is for root.
