I am considering buying my first Droid phone; however, i have a very business critical need with my cell phone.
I need to be able to copy a phone number (not a "contacts" number, but a random phone number) from call log and be able to paste it in a calendar entry.
For example: 555-555-5555 (copy) and then paste in a calendar entry for 5:00 pm on June 8, 2010.
PLEASE, PLEASE HELP! I am sick of my Crackberry and need a Droid, but can't do so without this feature!

I just tried on mine, and cant figure out a way to copy the number. The only options are to call back the number, text the number, or save it to contacts. however, you can save it to contacts, then "invite" that contact to an event on the calendar. There may be an app to do it as well.

And BTW, it's not a Droid, that's a verizon phone.

Unfortunately I can't help you with the copy from call log, but it's not a Droid HTC Evo. Droid is a trademark of Lucasfilm licensed to Verizon Wireless. They use it for their Moto Droid, Droid Incredible, Droid Eris, etc. It is simply the HTC Evo 4G which runs Android, the operating system. Just a heads up as walking around calling it a Droid won't give you any tech cred.

Currently with HTC Sense you will have add the number and go into contacts to long press and copy the number, but I guarantee if there is not already an app to do this, then there will be soon! Have you tried searching the market yet?

You can copy and paste on the evo. not sure if every app gives you the option, but in messaging, or gmail application or opening a document in quickoffice, long press on the text you want to copy, it they gives you the option to copy. long press where you want to paste and it gives you the option to paste... The evo has the built in app called quickoffice, where you can email yourself an MS office word, excel or other doc which it saves on your storage card and you can acces and read... you can copy text from there also, then paste where you want. Hope this helps. FYI...I have been a windows mobile user for almost a decade and have only had my evo for a few days so it is a learning curve, but like you I need my phone for work and since I love the evo I am bound and determined to find ways to have it do what I need it to.

Im so tired of people calling all ANDROID phones a Droid, Droid is the name Verizon uses for phones running Android OS not other companys. Its called the HTC Evo not the Droid HTC Evo.(sorry im just have gotten sick of people calling all phones with Android the Droid ever since the original Droid came out)

Just a quick tip: if you're needing to copy something out of Gmail, you can use Gmail's website in a browser. Copy and paste work fine there. I actually prefer the mobile client for anything beyond a quick email check since, ironically, it seems more robust with a better user interface. They really do need to work on the native client.

I don't know what gmail app you are using, but it is becoming apparent that it sucks. I use the HTC mail app, and setup pop email, and Gmail in it. and I can copy and paste with the long press. I suggest you use a different method of accessing your gmail that does not take away the simple feature for copy and paste that was included on your phone out of the box.

Actually, I think you're right all except for the gmail app. The built in gmail app doesn't allow you to cut & paste. It has trouble getting to attachments as well, I've noticed. Astounding given that I got this phone b/c I'm so dependent on google services in the first place.

Re the question from the OP, I think the only thing I think you could do is long press the number, tell it you want to send a text, then when it brings up the text screen, long press in the "To:" box to "copy all text." Ridiculously arduous, but the only thing I can figure out.

A possible work around is to long press the number from the call log then select "Send text messge". Once in the sms app you should be able to long press the number and copy it.

"I have tried the long press on my g mail on my Evo and I get absolutley nothing. If I go to my sbc account I get the clipboard to come up and I can copy and paste. Very frustrating"

In the EVO gmail app you must choose select 'menu' > 'more' > 'select text'. When you select the text you want it will automatically be copied to the clipboard.

In the Mail app you can long press text to copy.

EDIT: Didn't note the date of the OP. My bad.

Copy and Paste is one of the MAIN functions that I miss in going from a BB to the Evo. I hope there is a fix soon.

Guys it is posible with the gmail app. You can copy and paste what ever you want from your email. Open your gmail >>click menu>>click more >>choose select text and then select what ever you want from your email. To past just do a long press down on the location and there you have it :)

I've read all these threads and haven't seen the original question answered, I don't see how to copy a phone number that is in recent calls, period. If it's not in your contact list, there is no way to copy it. Someone mentioned long pressing and sending text to that number, then long pressing the number in the text message and then copy all. Seems like a lot to do... My Blackberry was much easier. This new Android phone is suppose to be so much better????

I think the best work around, is to just buy a itouch, or ipad and then use those to do the copy and paste work. . . I love my evo 4g, but if I'm doing anything other than sharing my hotspot, I miss my iphone. . . .Its Ipad time!!

I came to this forum looking for a copy/paste option ~ did not find it ... but in reading all of the listings, it amazes me how unkind some of the responses are. "Droid" vs "HTC Evo" ~ I can call my phone "George" if I want, it doesn't really matter. I apologize if anyone is offended by using the terminology "Droid" when it's just an Evo ... but is that offensive? really? Why would that bother a person. I don't call my phone anything but "my phone" but if I was a newbie looking for information, I may have called it a "droid" ~ I thought my issue was with the phone (Evo) vs operating system (Android) ... I just want to say some of us aren't as "tech" as others and that's why we come to YOU for assistance. That's all that was needed - assistance. I did find the solution ... on the HTC website.

How do I copy and paste text?

    2. Click Menu > Select Text Copy/Paste > .
    3. Use the NAVIGATION CONTROL to position the cursor where you want to start copying and then click Select.
Tip: Click Menu > Select All to select the whole message.
    4. Press NAVIGATION left/right until you have selected the text you want to copy and then click Copy.

Here is the way to copy text from the installed email app. I have 3 email accounts, and only use the installed POP Email Account.

    1. Forward the email (you are now in Edit Mode)
    2. Long Press the email you are forwarding. It will highlight all but the word you have your finger on.
    3. Slide the green up icon to select all the text
    4. Popup menu with options show up, click the Document Icon.
    5. All Text is now copied to the clipboard.
    6. Go to another app and paste the text.

I also went from a BlackBerry to EVO and there are some simple things like this on the blackberry that are very intuitive and easy to do. HTC EVO is in need of some tweaks, but for me, never to return to BB.

    Droid copy paste - YouTube
The trick is to press and hold down the message box that you are to paste to (don't just tap). Doing this provides a pop up menu that allows you to paste in several manners.

This one was a life saver for me!
