Open the e-mail > Menu > More > Select text.

I know some people may think that was a stupid question, but for write some time, I was unable to copy/paste from gmail either. It just recently started working. I was very familiar with how to do it. It just wouldn't give me the "select text" option. I wonder if that was one of the fixes in the gmail app updare that just happened a couple days ago!

If I remember reading correctly, the Gmail application doesn't have the, "copy text," feature unless you're on 2.2. If you're still on 2.1, look into using the app, "Copy & Paste It." - Copy Paste It - Android app on AppBrain
