create app sending sms and receiving phone opens it with same app

Hello,

I would like to create an Android app sending text/pictures using SMS or MMS for long distance and Bluetooth for short distance. If 2 phones installed the app, is it possible to send the text/picture with a special file extention and the receiving phone recognizes the file extention and opens it with my app?
