My first post, my first smartphone EVO & my first Android device, so please be gentle :)

I am planning to buy an EVO, so a little cautious with the whole process. Sprint does provide insurance, which I know covers damage, loss, etc... but was wondering if any of you have any experience with your Credit Card company that extends the product warranty.

I just talked to my CC company and the rep said that if I purchase any device with my CC then they would extend the warranty by an additional year i.e. Manufacturer's warranty + 1 year. I was thinking about not going for the Sprint warranty and instead rely on HTC 1 year + CC additional 1 year warranty. Has anybody ever experienced any product damage especially cell phone damage/loss/issues and how the CC covers it? Any thoughts or experiences are most welcome.

My buddy used it for his laptop and it was kind of a hassle. I think it got taken care of eventually, though. The process for him was, get a repair quote at a legitimate repair center, fax over the original receipt along with the quote and they'll see what they can do.

I think the process stretched for like 2 months before he got the repair credit back. So I think it's a solid option, so long as you don't expect overnight service.

If you are going to use your CC for warranty be weary of the following..

You must purchase the phone with your credit card at the full purchase price on the receipt. So if you preordered at BB or RS and using the $50 gift card you won't be covered.

Credit cards have some specific rules when it comes to their coverages.

They also cover 90 days of accidental damage and theft when using the card.

EDIT: After reading the current contract for AMEX I no longer see the exclusion for cellular devices. So I must stand corrected (at least for AMEX GOLD and AMEX COSTCO).

I work for fifth third bank. Our policy is this, if you pay for your phone bill with our card then you get coverage up to 250 with a 50 deductible, no matter what the issue is with the phone (lost, stolen, broken, etc). Not the best option, but at least it is free. Other companies have better policies, but i think the best is probably insurance through the carrier.

EDIT: I wanted to add that this is insurance set up specifically for cell phones and that while to some I may be a lowly customer service agent, I'm also top ranked out of 600 people.

True, but you would be covered if you put BOTH the gift card AND the balance on the same card. When you pick up the item you are charged the full price minus the $50 gift card. All you need to do is "prove" the initial $50 was put on the same credit card. If they didn't allow that no one could put down a deposit on a special order item (custom blinds, special order watches etc) then pick it up when it comes in and be covered.

You could also pay for it with CC and use the gift card to purchase accessories
