Sorry I just mistyped on the computer, i just rechecked and i did type it correctly on the phone. I did type SU at the start and was granted superuser permission, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I went into aNDexplorer and rechecked the filename of flash_imagine and it is correct and unzipped in there, not in a folder. I will back out and try again from the start.

One question before I retry it, at the beginning when I type "su reboot recovery" am I supposed to change it to local instead of ssh? I did that because under ssh it wouldn't let me type su reboot recovery. I just retried it and pretty sure that I was doing the right thing there.

    After I typed the first line "mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock1 /system"
and hit enter, there was no message displayed it just went to the next line, that's when I typed in the "cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image" and keep getting the invalid length error.

Would it be easier if I download ADB and the drivers for it and try entering the commands that way, instead of using connect bot?
If I do it this way, do I need to enable usb debugging like I do for tethering?
Thanks guys. I'm starting to get obsessed with this. LOL.

It looks like I did a dumb thing. I did the volume down, home and power button reboot without successfully flashing the custom recovery menu first. So the phone rebooted and looks like I lost everything on it, looks right out of the box. :-( I'm stupid.

update: I recovered about half of the apps, etc. that I'd downloaded through the market, but pdanet which I paid for only shows the free version. At the end of this month I'm moving and the phone is my only source of internet and I need the paid version to access secure sites. Looks like I might have to pay again. :-(

Secondly, the phone still has superuser permission but universal androot is nowhere to be seen on the phone. I assume I need to reinstall that in case I need to unroot? Or can I just leave it out on the assumption that I won't have to?

Update: I'm making progress. It turned out the reason for the error was that the files unzipped into folders automatically and I didn't realize it. I had to delete them and reinstall and change the name of the file so it didn't create them in a folder (hard to explain properly) but anyways got the flash image properly located not in a folder, and then the command worked. Then I had the same problem with the recovery imagine, so I'm reinstalling it now, and I'm almost home free.

Okay so it worked and I got the Android recovery menu screen. Couldn't figure out how to scroll through the options but hitting enter selected reboot for me. Then the phone rebooted and was not a brick :)
Just finished Nandroid backup and rebooting. Then I am thinking about trying that sample deodexed rom from DSI. Wish me luck!
Thanks again for the help so far.

I've watched a couple videos on flashing roms and seen a few different ways and now I'm kind of confused. I have downloaded the sample deodexed rom from the top of the first page here The first video I watched, showed him unzipping it on the computer, before transferring to the nandroid folder of the sd card. So that's what I did. The next 2 vids I watched, they put the zip file right on the sd card and did some sort of wipe and partition, then unzipped it in recovery mode. Now I'm not feeling too confident and afraid of making a brick.

I was ready to go for it and chickened out. I went into recovery mode and selected nandroid restore and it gave me the 2 folders as options, the nandroid backup i made, and the folder with the deodexed rom, i selected it and then it wanted me to select one of the files inside, 3 of which were folders, the first was the .img file. I was going to select that one.
Edit: I tried loading the uncompressed zip folder right onto the root of the SD card, I can see it along with the other zip files that I had to unzip for the recovery image, but when I go into recovery mood and try to unzip those files, I can only see all the folders on the sdcard, when I get to the bottom the last folder, it doesn't show all the zip files below that. I have no idea where to go from here.

If you guys can give me some guidance at this point, I will go for it. Thanks.

^Since you're rooted, you don't have to use pdanet for internet, as Barnacle Tether supports wifi and Bluetooth tethering, with access to everything

Thanks, Barnacle is working good. Now I jsut have to figure out how to safely install this rom without making a brick. :)

If you want to flash the rom you DON'T unzip its contents. Just put the zip file at the root of your sd card and select the option in the recovery menu to flash an update zip.

Just sent a PM, hopefully your still online.
Edit:I guess I got too impatient and I went ahead and tried partitioning sdcard, thinking maybe then I would be able to access the zip files. I guess I didn't properly understand the meaning of partition, as now all of my music, pictures, videos and backups of school files (which i don't really need now) are all lost.

Since that's all lost anyways, i'm going to try to copy the deodexed rom zip file over to the root of the sdcard once again, and see if it's this time accessible while in recovery mode.

Update:Well the rom is flashed, after the partitioning, I was able to copy the zip file to the sdcard and it installed no problem. Only error that happened was on boot up it said rom manager wasn't responding, force close or wait, i clicked wait and then it didn't reoccur? Anyways everything else appears to be just as it was before except the build number in about phone shows the name of the rom that i installed. So I guess that is right. What other differences should there be beside that I can install themes now?

Since I don't know what zipaligned, nano text editor, etc are, the only difference I've noticed with the new rom is that the phone hasn't randomly restarted since flashing it. (Used to do that maybe once every few days), also it runs live wallpapers off the market that didn't work before.
My last question is, if the 2.2 update does become available OTA do I have to flash the stock rom back on and then unroot, and then it should work fine?

For OTA updates, you'll need to reflash to the stock recovery menu, but everything else can remain the same. OR, you can wait for someone to make a version of the 2.2 ROM so that it is rooted, and you can flash that without any modifications required.

I'm kind of sad this thread died. I would have loved to see more development on this, and I don't think I'm savvy enough to cook a ROM let alone develop kernel implementations for overclocking and such.

I'm disappointed too. I was hoping some good stuff would get made for this phone since I'm likely going to be stuck with it for 3 years or more. I do want to wait until the 2.2 update before modifying anything else but i really would like either better battery life or faster performance. I'm pretty sure my friends Desire lasts longer than mine but its hard to tell cause i do use mine a lot more. I start back to school on monday but while i was on holidays i would have to recharge 2 or 3 times a day cause i used the phone so much. I can get 12 to 16 hrs normally though.

So I've been meaning to develop my own ROM for the Shine Plus based off of Cyanogen's latest builds (it's in alpha for 2.3 currently), but my biggest problem is that I don't actually own this phone, my wife does, and she will NOT let me touch it.

Ever since her Gears of War 2 progress was reset (she was level 68) she doesn't trust me with tech. I happened to be adjusting a setting on the router when her thing got reset, but it's actually a common problem with the game's code.

Anyhow, that's neither here nor there, I'm putting this out to see if anyone has a broken or busted phone they are willing to part with. Something with a cracked screen or anything like that, so long it boots up and I can test phone calls on it to get a ROM build working.

Or if anyone has a suggestion on where to get one I'll take the suggestion too.

    Hi,

Very good question. I've been wanting some custom ROMs, so I'd love to help! If I see something for you, I'll be sure to advise you. I'd check ebay, I've seen a few over the last few weeks... Also I'd check local listings.

    Good luck!

Anyone make any progress? I haven't found a phone to test anything on so I haven't put any time into it.

Has ANYONE made ANY progress with this?

I really don't want to let this thread die, THIS IS ALL WE HAVE!

I haven't heard of anything at all yet, but I'm waiting for 2.2 to become available, then once I do the update I will eventually want to re root and custom rom again probably.

Since 2.2 allows wifi tethering I may not even require root, right now I need it to run barnacle.

Also if it speeds up a bit with 2.2 I probably won't be worried about overclocking since it's not all that bad now depending on how I have things set up.

I only put the custom rom on so that I could do theming, but I never saw any themes come out for it and I'm not advanced enough to do on my own. The only benefit I got out of the custom rom was that the phone no longer occasionally reboots for no reason, but it wasn't a huge problem anyways cause it never happened while I was in the middle of anything.

No skills with ROMs here and this phone is RARELY seen in the wild... Kinda sucks considering it's just a beefed up Ally. Kinda dissapointed the development path is stalled on this cell phone.

Oh well.. Having too much fun with my HD2 though! ;) haha

Yeah you would think for the price it would be a more popular seller. I haven't seen one person with one at school or anywhere. The phone feels like it will last a long time too. Consumers reports rated the lg ally as a recommended buy. Maybe we just need to wait a bit longer.

okay so i followed the instructions step by step and ever repeated them several times start to finish. nothing happens when i type in the commands and how do i make a nandroid?

and do the lg ally roms work on the shine plus?
  25. 350Rocket

    350Rocket Well-Known Member

The lg ally roms don't work on the shine plus.
As far as your problem I'm not much help when i did it i had a few hitches but each time i figured out something that i had done wrong or misread the instructions and eventually i got it to work. I'm a newb at this and i don't remember the specific issues that i had now. Hopefully someone else can be of more help.
