I have a number of questions about AOSP-only based ROMs, I figured that since the Evo is my first Android device, and that I've gone full on with rooting and rom(ing), there are others out there just like me.

I thought this thread could be for questions and hopefully answers on AOSP-only based Roms like Cyanogenmod, which are much different than SENSE.

    Thanks!

In cyanogenmod is there a way to link up your contacts?

How about editing or viewing groups from your contacts? Is that possible?

I really like the dialer in Sense, is there some way to get something similar in Cyanogenmod, something that finds your contacts when you type in the letter's of their names via corresponding number?

I think the contacts thing is covered once you add gapps.

For dialers, check the market. There are a lot of choices. You can't use sense anything on cy6 if I have read correctly.

Hey everyone, I'm really nervous about rooting my Evo, I love the phone, but I want more from it including FroYo, so I have a few asks:

    1. How likely is it that my phone is bricked even if I follow a great guide absolutely perfectly?

    2. Can someone please put my mind to ease about this whole rooting thing, then I can just let go and do it already?! :p

    3. Before flashing a ROM like CM6, but after rooting your phone, do you still have all the same capabilities that you had on your phone (and apps) with the addition of superuser access?

    4. What are the pros/cons of the three most popular ROMs (CM6, DC, and Fresh)?

Thank you so much for helping me out with this!

Honestly, not very likely. Here is the guide I followed for Simple Root:

    [Program] SimpleRoot OTA 1.47.651.1 Edition - xda-developers

Make sure your PC has .NET Framework 4.0 and HTC Sync installed (links to both on that page), turn on USB Debugging, then download the Simple Root program itself and follow the instructions in the boxes that pop up as you hit each button.

You will have all the same capabilities (and more, thanks to root), but you will have to factory reset your phone if you use the Simple Root link above so you will lose your installed apps. If you have been using AppBrain, you will have a relatively easy way to reinstall them.

What benefits are there to using the Simple Root method that you discussed versus this guide: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-evo-4g/99793-tutorial-idiot-proof-root-guide.html

If you follow up with a nand unlock, what really is the difference?

NAND Unlock gives u full access and control over ur phone which Unrevoked does not do you can also run any ROM of ur choice.Unrevoked ur only limited to some ROM's.

I believe I understand that part, but I mean using unrevoked3, then a nand unlock. Is there anything I could not do at that point?

To me the process to unlock NAND it self is more complicated than if you a Simple Root which unlock NAND.Just 3 easy steps and you'll be done in no time.

If u r up for the challenge of unlocking nand it self I believe theres plenty of info around here on how to do so.After that u r gonna be able to do everything.

Tempted to give this one a whirl.

one question, what about apps? I dont use a ton of apps but can I expect most of them to work on the CM Froyo or should I expect them not to work?

Ok Ive got some questions before I get started on this.

1 Once I root will I still be able to use LauncherPro as my default.

2 Will this will correct the Bluetooth issue so that I can use a ps3 controller for emulators.

3 Will the flash player come included or do I have to go download it.

4 Do the camera's work. I know there is no 4g.

5 Which roms come with the sense ui. Is it just damage control.

6 Is it somewhat easy to go back to stock if Im not enjoying this entire experience.

I had know idea what I was getting in to when I decided to root my phone. I have only basic computer skills, and a decent head for problem solving. I downloaded
[Program] SimpleRoot OTA 1.47.651.1 Edition - xda-developers followed the step by step directions. Several attempts later I had a rooted evo. I was unable to get wireless tether app and super user until I also ran unrevoked. If you can read and use this site you can get your self out of most trouble you may have. Root and be free!

    1-Yes
    2-IDK
3-Yes you will have to download it,that what I had to do when I downloaded my first nightly.
4-Yes they both work with CM6.
5-If u like sense you are not limited to DC.Ava is a Froyo based rom with sense ui.
6-Do a nandroid backup before u flash any rom.If u don't like the experience u can always go back to the one u had.

I know it's more complicated, but it's how I did it :) I just was worried I would miss something. I could go back and use toast if I had to...but if I am there I see no reason to.

I've learned enough to be dangerous, which is why I am trying to be careful.

    Everyone's mileage will be different.

When I was running CyanogenMod some things I missed were.

4g- I live in a 4g area and sometimes use it.

HTC Sense- Specifically copy and paste, the dialer (like pressing 6275 for the letters M-A-R-K), the widgets (I have the main clock, twitter, calender, the music player, and news on my home screens).

Camera-I'm no photographer but I do know how to use ISO in bad lighting conditions and bright lighting conditions. I missed having camera settings.

Keyboard-I'm addicted to the HTC_IME keyboard. There is a froyo version if it but you can't calibrate it. This is probably the reason why I went back, I could manage without my sense widgets and 4g but I couldnt give up the keyboard.

Those are the things I was missing when I ran CM for a day and half.

In the market there is a paid app called atakephone. It works like the sense dialer.
Are you saying you had the main clock added With Froyo or no?
