I ended up replacing my D1 with a D2G for insurance too, and I love it. There's a couple things that I miss about D1, two main things:
- Soft keyboard seems a little off (in landscape), I seems to miss the space bar somehow.
- Auto text seems less refined, it worked better on my D1
- The rearrangement of the softkeys took about a week to get used to, but I don't even think anything of it anymore.
But overall I really like the upgrade, I'm really glad I got it and generally don't miss my D1 at all.
It seems so much faster due to the faster processor (stock 1.2 Ghz) and the extra, much needed, RAM. The original Droid shared 256 MB with apps installed on internal storage (which is why it slows down so badly when too many apps are installed), while the Droid 2 Global has 8 GB internal storage, of that 512 MB is allocated for untouched RAM, hence plenty of space for internally installed apps and whatnot.
The D2G comes with an 8GB SD Card. Fortunately, when Best Buy swapped my phones out, they allowed me to keep my 16 GB chip, and kept the 8 GB SD Card that the D2G comes with. So I'm happy about that.
The D2G comes with wifi media sharing that allows me to share the pictures, music, and videos with my PS3 via wifi. I think it's pretty neat. Nothing you couldn't find on the market for a D1 though.
When I had the D1 I felt everyone's pain when demanding large apps (Google Earth) to include App 2 SD, while now I don't even think about it. I haven't installed a single app to my SD card, unless the app automatically installed to my SD Card, and only 7% of my internal memory is utilized.
I don't really mess with Blur much, I barely notice that it's there, and compared to the speed of the D1, I can't say that it "drags" my phone down as I have no comparison.
I think that by the time you get used to the rearrangement of the softkeys that overall, you'll see and feel that this is quite a major upgrade, behind the scenes.
I don't know what "fake root" is, but I used
z4root with no problem at all. If busybox doesn't install automatically with
z4root, (it didn't on mine for some reason) download the busybox installer from the market, after you root your phone, and use that to install busybox.
I've never used custom ROMs and I have no interest in overclocking my phone beyond the stock 1.2 Ghz as I feel it is more than sufficient, but I do use SetCPU to set a profile so my phone will underclock itself while the screen is off to save battery.
I hope that this makes your transfer to the new D2G easier and also makes you feel better. I was nervous for the same reason as you when I was involuntarily upgraded, but now, about a month later, I'm very happy with my Droid 2 Global. At times I think it's what the original Droid should have been. Besides, at least now, if you decide to visit Europe or Asia, you'll be able to take your phone with you.
Good luck!!
