Is it possible to configure an android phone so that the only data that ever gets sent / received is email data? No other internet data like web browsing, internet chat etc. should be allowed to go through.... I'm on a 2mb data plan, don't want to burn through it just because the system is looking for updates or something like that.

sounds like something a dev would have to come up with. It doesn't appear to have any default settings like that. Seems data is either on or off (and off isn't "really" off from what I've read).

Well, basically what I'm after is the same behaviour that I have on my palm treo 600. Anytime I want to receive email, I manually do a "send and recieve", but other then that, no data ever goes through the phone without my permission.

I've read stories of the iphone using data behind the user's back and racking up huge bills, I want to avoid that and I'm just curious if the android can be configured like my palm.

This is only if you take the phone outside of the country, in the us there is unlimited data on t-mo and the iPhone. I'm not sure if either carrier has addresses the issue of data transfer outside of the states. The phones constantly access the Internet to updat e-mail, etc without you knowing.
