Debrand / Root Help Please

    Hi everyone,

I'm sorry if this topic has already been covered.

I've just bought a HTC One X, which was locked to the Orange UK network. I've now unlocked it so that I can use it with my O2 sim card.

The handset still has the Orange bloatware and splash screens present, and I want to get these removed, effectively 'debranding' the handset completely.

I'm also having a problem setting up an APN profile. I've manually entered all of the details, which were supplied to me from O2, but it won't actually let me select the profile that I've created. I've entered the details 3 times now, so they're definitely correct.

Basically, what I want to do is replace the Orange firmware with the stock HTC firmware, so that when I boot the phone up with the O2 sim card in it, it treats it like a new handset, and automatically sets itself up.

    Could someone help please?

I've very new to this, so some simple instructions would be great.

I'd also be more than happy to send the handset to a trustworthy forum member, and have them do this for me (I'd pay a little bit to have it done).

Again, apologies if this has already been discussed. I'm in work at the moment, so I'm not supposed to be on here, and I'm quickly typing this message before I get caught!

    Thanks :)

At the moment, I think the only way to debrand would be to install a custom ROM, is that what you're after or are you just looking for a stock ROM without root etc.

There might be a way though, I'm not sure what the SIM unlock does, can you download CID Getter and let me know what you're CID is please

Haha, been there, done that many a time :p

Thanks for the reply - I'll download that software when I finish work and will post again.

Regarding what you've suggested - I'm not really sure what I need. I just want to be able to use my phone with my O2 SIM card, and without the Orange splash screens and bloatware on it. At the moment I can use my O2 sim card in it, but I'm having problems setting up the mobile data which I presume is down to the fact that it's already got the Orange setting pre-installed..?

OK. So I've now downloaded CID Getter.

At the top of my screen, it says [CID is:] [ORANG001]

Is this what you're looking for?

Thanks, I wanted to see if the network unlock had blanked your CID (Carrier ID, this just tells the phone what network/software versions it can accept) and it hasn't.

Unlocking your bootloader via htcdev blanks your CID which would technically allow you to run an unbranded RUU. However, you can't run an RUU with an unlocked bootloader. If you really wanted the network branding and apps removed, your only option is to root and install a new ROM. It's not a difficult process, but can seem daunting at first: http://androidforums.com/one-x-all-...-root-one-x-flash-custom-roms-cursed4eva.html

What bloatware do you have btw? I'm Orange and the only thing I can see is Your Orange.

I've checked the phone now, and there isn't as much bloatware on it as I first thought

So I'm quite happy to keep it "as is" for now, rather than fiddling with something I don't know a heck of a lot about! The issue I'm having with the APN settings is a known O2 issue, rather than an issue with the firmware on the handset, so I'm going to wait for them to fix it before deciding what I want to do.

I'll take a look at those links though, thanks :)

i am looking for the same solution do
    my CID is VODAP001.

is it possible to debrand on stock rom ?
if not, what if once debranding is done via custom room, i unroot it back?

    Thank you

    My CID is OPTUS001.

I was able to unlock using HTC Dev, and then go through the usual steps to flash a custom ROM.

Came out on the other side debranded. Even the boot logo was gone which surprised me as I thought you needed S-OFF for that and we dont have that yet for the One X. Anyway, Bye bye Optus bloatware (Optus installed a whole bunch of crap).

You can unroot it back afterwards, but once again, due to the lack of S-OFF, there is no way to unlock the bootloader without using HTC Dev, and no way to relock it without HTC Dev. When you relock it, the state is 'RE-LOCKED' and opposed to 'LOCKED'. Therefore, it can be seen that you have unlocked it in the past. This *might* invalidate a warranty claim, depending on the nature of the claim.

When S-OFF is available, perhaps you could could lock it 'properly' as at that point, we would have full access to the device. But you'd have to ask someone more experienced than me, as I've only been learning about this over the last day or so.

ill search about it more before trying it on HTC One X

The unlocking and rooting part is easy.

S-OFF is going to be the challenge. It took over 1 year to find an exploit for the Desire... So I wouldn't hold my breath. But definitely cross your fingers!! :)

    Welcome to AF! :)

There is no way to unlock at the moment, I suspect we'll need to for full S-OFF for that. The best you can do at the moment is install a custom ROM based on the WWE, unbranded software version.

Hi, thanks for the welcome, does that mean i can use a different sim, but it will still show Orange? if so where do i get the rom from? Sorry for all the questions, i'm a newbie to Android lol

Made a big mess of things lol, i went to add a new rom, but as i started the transfer & using fastboot, i realised, too late that i'd forgot to add the files needed to the sd card on my One X, so now i'm stuck with a brand new phone that loops to the HTC screen then stays there :(

I've been through the options on xda, but i cannot download the RUU i need, i'm on Orange UK, will any of the other RUU's work for me, the Orange UK has been unable 2 download all day, it says something's wrong with the server (typical lol)

Any & all help appreciated :)

You've made no other changes to the phone other than flashed the boot image via fastboot? I have a nandroid backup of the stock orange ROM with the 1.26 boot image you can try to flash again if you like?

Can you still get into clockwork?
  18. MattBennett

    MattBennett Member

Yeah i can get into clockwork, its totally stumped me :)

Which version? If you head to mounts and storage, connect to your PC, then mount USB? If it's worked, you should see the phone pop up as a disk drive on your PC.

If no, try flashing clockwork from here and try again.

I'm going to see if I have luck with the RUU btw, if I can download, I'll stick one on my dropbox for you.

It gets worse, when i go to install zip from sdcard, there is nothing there apart from the clockwork mod file, no phone files nothing, i think i may of killed it:(

I can't mount it has a USB drive, files are missing :(

What exactly have you done up to this point? Flashed clockwork and the boot.img file?
  22. MattBennett

i followed eveything on htcdev.com to unlock bootloader etc, it worked fine, then i downloaded a rom & thought i was following the instructions, but i missed the part to add files to the sd card, so when i carried it it just stuck on the HTC screen

    Ok :)

Rather than mess about, trying to work out what went wrong, there's an RUU here: [ROM]Endeavor Shipped ROM Collection - Page 12 - xda-developers

You'll need to relock your bootloader before you apply though. I've downloaded in case I need one at any point too.

I need to head to bed shortly, but if you relock your bootloader, run the ruu in fastboot, that should get your phone back to a workable state and we can pick up the whole custom ROM install tomorrow?

I carried on looking on XDA whilst waiting for the RUU to download, i found this; (TUT) Last Chance to Recovery when you have battery low or other stuff wont work - xda-developers it only went & worked, my phones back up & running again, thanks a lot for helping me out :)
