Nice one, looks like the clearest and simplest guide so far... I see that I need two SD cards though, currently using the one that came with the phone as both my gold card and everyday card with tunes etc on...

You don't need to use 2, you can use the same one, but I recommend using a separate one as your gold card. They are very cheap, think someone mentioned before you can get a 1GB one for under a fiver in Tesco or something.

i was into jailbreaking so ill definitely get into rooting,no pun intended.

  10. I have a SanDisk 64Mb card - will that be big enough to make me a Gold card??

Nope, you need to put a 120mb file on your gold card as part of the root process.

  12. Ok thanks, I'll bin that one!

Can I use the 4Gb card that came with the phone? (I've copied all on it to a folder on my PC)

Is there a big down side to using the one card as a gold card and then using it in the phone?

I don't have a separate card reader/writer. Can I put the phone in disk drive mode and format from windows?

Sorry for all the dump questions!

    ^ I just did!

I have an 8GB one for general usage so I've no issues with using the same card for multiple purposes but as Lekky says, it can be done.

  14. Did you format the card while it was in the phone?

It will wipe your phone, put it back to the state it was when you bought it, blank. But you can backup as explained in the guide.

But once rooted its the same experience as normal, but you get the option to download and use more apps.

I formatted the gold card on my PC via its card reader. Later during the root process I had to format my main 8GB card for Apps2SD, which had to be done on the Desire through the special boot menu.

Very nice guide lekky. I was following the modaco thread as I was doing mine and got confused by many of the posts from people who obviously knew their way around android/linux.

then as I got closer and closer easier methods kept appearing!

This looks so straight forward using all windows now :)

  20. Ok thanks for that. I don't have a card reader/writer attached to my PC so I guess I'm stuffed for rooting?

you can create a goldcard in your phone (i did)

connect it via the htc sync option for the first part - issuing the adb command to get the long hex code

then after you have your goldcard.img from revskills, switch to disk drive mode for hex editing

[edit] oh dear, the revskills page no longer creates goldcard images for free...
Paul is looking into purchasing and providing the goldcard creation on Modaco

eek, but apparently only those with non-generic firmwares need to use a goldcard.

  25. What ones are non-generic? I have an orange phone.

Just when things were becoming less muddy, a wave comes in!
