Hi -- this is my first post, so please be gentle. My Desire takes more than 5 minutes to shut down when I turn it off at night. Is this normal, or is it likely that a rogue app is preventing a speedy shut down?

    Thanks
    Ian

I cannot give you a 100% answer as I haven't had a chance to play on my Desire yet but I wouldn't think that 5 minutes is normal.

On my Hero which is inferior (Specs wise) to the Desire, the shut down process from clicking "Ok to shutdown" takes around about 10 seconds if that.

Yeah the Hero shuts down in an instant. The Desire takes longer, but not 5 mins. half a minute i think. Is 5 mins an exaggeration?! If you have lots of apps running in the background then it might take longer i suppose.

Thanks guys. No, 5 minutes wasn't an exaggeration. I select "power off", put the phone down, come back a few minutes later and it's still shutting down. I'm not running a huge number of apps, so perhaps (when I've got some time on my hands!) I should uninstall them all and see if that helps. I could then re-install one at a time to find the problem.

It might be easier to use a task killer than to uninstall them.

Open up taskiller and see which apps are open before you shut down, maybe try killing them all to ensure that it is an app thats causing it.

When I had the Desire ROM on, it took... significantly... slower to either boot up or shut down. In general, I think it's just heavier on the system than vanilla Android.

Advanced Task Killer shows the following running:
Music, calendar, fm radio, people, clock, shopsavvy, color note, footprints, googlemail, London tube status, engadget, settings, market, juice defender, Facebook, messages, internet, advanced task killer.

If i close all 3rd party apps the phone shuts down in seconds, so now its just a process of elimination to find the offending app...

Yesterday I had the same problem. If it helps I had just installed shop savvy when it started to play up. Was shutting down fine before then.

I have shopsavvy doesnt cause a problem for me.

FM Radio may be a culprit, it may need to shut down the radio before turning off, which can take a while. Try just killing that and see how fast it turns off.

Yes, i was waiting for mine to shut for over 5mins and then i got so fed up i took the battery out. Like you say it probably had something to do with the amount of apps running in the background, as when i switched it on and then off after a minute or so it shut down within 30 seconds or so.

Since I last posted my phone is now shutting down in 5 seconds, without intervention from a task manager. The only things that have changed are a few app updates and the OTA software update (although I think the shut down improved before the OTA update). In other words, this is a mystery to me!

Argh this is now happening to me. >:-|

I've had some slightly weird behaviour, like the browser becoming unresponsive. And when I switch off it takes so long I end up having to remove the battery. Guess I'll go through my apps and see if I can find a culprit.

I had had this problem and i have brought it down to the phone being really hot due to high usage. It shuts down quickly when i havnt been using it but if i have been using it heavily for an hour or so (browsing, games, videos) and then turn it off it takes 5mins!

The solution, for me, was to close all apps, background tasks, wifi, etc, etc and then let it cool down for a few mins before i shut it down.

Mine is taking over 5 minutes which is crazy. Task killing could help I guess but isn't this frowned upon on android devices?

Happend to me 2 :p, but I uninstalled advanced taskkiller and ist ok now...have to shutdown the phone some more so I'll be sure it was the taskkillers fault.

Yeah I'm experiencing this! Just attempted to shut down and it was over 15 mins before I have in and just took on the battery.

Before I tried i used the task manager to kill everything but: internet, gmail, calendar, weather, settings and 3g watchdog.... gonna uninstall 3g watchdog and see how that goes....

Admittedly it had been close to a weeksinve my last shutdown.

New member here making first post (although have viewed boards without posting before).

I had a similar problem although for me it took about 45 minutes and that is no exaggeration (did it before a journey so know it took that long!).

Not sure what caused it though!

i'm experiencing exactly the same issue as you guys - have installed and used 'advanced task killer' to no avail so i'm by no means convinced this is the solution

out of interest, is it actually necessary to regularly turn your phone off if you dont have to? i never need to switch sims or memory cards so can i live happily with my phone constantly switched on?

    cheers fellas

It just sounds like a rogue app/service, keeping the phone from closing. Similar to how a PC might hang when you switch it off because of a program not closing correctly.

You shouldnt have to turn off your phone, but i make a habit off turning off at least once a week, just to refresh the ram.

another thing i've noticed is that as the handset is 'shutting down' the little SD card symbol is faintly visible in the top-left corner throughout.

not sure if this means anything or is a product of the problem?

well i got the same problem one or two times e 1st two week i bought the phone
but then since i already customized e phone n installed the invisible shield..i dont really bother to get a refund or anything..i decide to juz put up wif e problem n find the cause..after all, it most definitely not a hardware issues..so it can be fixed somehow

well, now i dont really bother to shut down e phone(since when we called turn off the phone as shut down?lol)n the problem doesnt reappear for some reason..i dont really do anything wif the phone..no tweaking wif setting..no installing some weird tools..no etc2..so i guess.its juz a hit n miss problem..it might occur but doesnt bother me to much..well thats for me..i dont really turn off the phone occasionally

well, might not be any help at all..i juz wanna share..cheers =D

I have the same problem. AFAIK the sd card symbol is just saying the card is unmounted which is normal.
If I kill astrid before shutdown it works as it should.
