Help Desktop Icons not responding

My phone isn't responding when I try and open applications using the icons at the home screen. This is after i've swiped to unlock.

The touch screen is working though because I can open the application list at the bottom left and open apps through that, but nothing happens at all when I tap an app at home screen.

If I remember right my phone came up with a message I think about the SD card, maybe saying it can't read it properly.

Is there anything I can try other than doing a factory reset?
