I purchased a Motorola Droid last Sunday (2 days after it was released). To my great surprise, there is no way to differentiate alert tones between text messages, email and voicemail. Most phones allow different alert tones for different message types but not the Droid. Stunning!! I have searched the web for an app for this but I can't find one. How do I bug the software developers to quickly create a fix for this shortcoming?

Actually, you can change it. You go under each app (Email, Gmail, Messaging, etc...), click on the menu button and go to settings. Under there you'll be able to change the notification tone that it uses for that app. These tones are different than the ones for incoming calls. You can also add new tones by creating a folder on the SD card called "notifications" and putting your mp3's or music files in there.

Some apps even let you change the color of the LED that blinks...

Works great. Thanks for the guidance. I somehow overlooked that "tip" in the Operating Manual.

This is great info. But I want to do even more. I would like the Messaging app to play a different tone depending on who sent me the text message. How can I do that?

Can you set the email alerts to silence while you get ringtone alerts for phone calls and text messaging???? The email alerts are driving me crazy at night and just want the phone to let me know if I get a phone call or text for emergencies. Any suggestions would be great.

I actually don't get this option in my email. When I go to the Mail app, the only option I have is to enable the Notification sound or not...it doesn't give me the option to choose another notification sound at all...

    I am on a Desire with 2.2

I would like this exact feature, to have one sound for email, another for SMS etc...

    **Edit**
I am clearly an idiot...I was so busy getting frustrated that I can't change the email notification...I completely forgot that I can, in fact, change the text message notification.

So I set the default notification sound to be what I want for email and then changed the text message notification to my funky/annoying one that I wanted....

I have no idea why I didn't realise this before posting...ah well
