Google Voice was such a PITA!

The transcribe was never accurate, won't greet callers by their name, and the deal breaker was that when I had an anonymous call come in, I would never know who it was until I called back.

YouMail does all this for you, not to mention they have a ton of greetings to choose from! Even a way to annoy collection agency's. If you have a missed call from an unknown number, you get a text message with the caller ID's info! That was what made me want to come back to YouMail...

    The bads:
You have to pay to transcribe, monthly.
No "Google Number" - but you can still use it and have it forward to your phone.

Give it a shot - it's flipping awesome...

YouMail is quite good! I used it before I got Google Voice and have debated about going back to it.

I ditched Google Voice for Youmail on my Blackberry Storm, but went back to Google Voice on my Incredible. I don't really rely on transcripts, and the voicemail playback UI is pretty much the same. Google Voice lets you have unlimited texting anyway, so I do prefer that.

I agree. Gv sucks for transmissions. I used youmail and it was great. Thanks for reminding me to switch back to youmail.

Youmail is AWESOME!! I use Google Voice because I want have one phone number that rings all my lines.

Google should buy youmail and merge the two services.

I've tried both and prefer Youmail. Their app seem to handle a few things better like use of the proximity sensor (unless Google recently fixed that) and the volume seems to be louder on Youmail.

I used to use YouMail on my old Blackberry, but the app support was awful. I switched to Google Voice when I got an invitation a while back, and I haven't switched back. I don't really care about all the fancy features. It's the free transcription that did it for me.

I'm sticking with Google Voice... In fact, YouMail may be great, but I'm not even going to bother, and for one (ok, maybe two) simple reasons. One, GV is free and always will be. Secondly, and most importantly, you can count on GV being gradually, yet consistently updated and improved.

I have confidence that, what might not work right now will eventually be corrected. I wouldn't trust just any company with something as important as my phone number. YouMail may have great devs, but Google does too... AND they have deep pockets. Choosing a service like this is a long-term commitment, IMO and I want to choose a company I know will be around.

Now, if only they would just let you opt-out of "conversation view" in Gmail. That is my ONE major bitch.

Why is this a long term commitment? It is simple to switch back and forth. Presently youmail transcripts happen to be much more accurate. If gv improves at a later date I may consider switching back again. Why suffer with an inferior product in the present?

Haven't used youmail in a while, ribbit mobile has been very accurate with transcriptions and provides a soft phone too. Google voice transcriptions suck but other than that I like what they provide.

It's a commitment because not all of us want to dick with a new voicemail service every few weeks.

maybe I'm confused. To me Google Voice is all about the "one phone number" concept. I could give a sh*t about the voicemail that comes with it.

    YouMail is the bee's knees!

I've been using it since my Motorolla E815 days (five years or so) . . .

That's interesting - I switched from verizon's VVM to GV simply because I couldn't get it working on CM6. I don't care about transcription or any other custom VMail stuff. Just want to see the voicemails. *shrug* Plus, now I'm saving 3 bucks a month ;D

i use both because they are two completely different apps which perform an entirely different function. They have some overlapping features, but that is about it.
