As much as I love NYC/Long Island, it makes enjoying life to the fullest very difficult. The cost of living here is incredibly high as one can imagine. We've got some of the highest property taxes in the country here in Nassau County.

I think it would be more effective to move out of state to give my daughter the kind of quality of life she deserves. However, that's an idea for another day.

Before taking a trip and then moving, I just bought the goofiest looking, fastest SUV:

...at least I learned how to spend money.

If you're looking at possibly leaving NYC, and are willing to go from a huge city to something mid size, you should check out my post from page 7 about my city.

I don't know the exact sensus data on the matter, of course, but anectdotally, I can tell you a fairly large number of people from New York have moved here in the past several years, and the significant majority seem to like it. New York musician David Byrne was recently here, and was very pleasantly surprised by it, even going so far as to deliver the keynote speech for the move of a major social club into a larger, nicer facility downtown. Alton Brown was also just here, and was impressed, even calling Fong's Pizza one of the single coolest restaurant he's ever been to anywhere.

Its not NYC, of course, in neither the good ways or the bad ways. But it's also not the hick farm town that is the stereotype of the state it's found in.

Anyway, if you're at all interested in a mid-sized metro that is much more of a "small big city" than it is a "big small town" (and are willing to put up with bad weather, and meh rural natural vistas) see my post on page 7. :)

Bakersfield in California? Check: been there, done that ☺ You've got sequoias!
Not in B-town proper, but fairly close.

They've got oil, a decent country music scene, if that's what you are into, and a couple hours west to the coast or south to LA.

... or what, three or four hours to Vegas?

I'm a bit closer to the sequoias, but I end up in Bakersfield once or twice a year on business.

I don't mind the city where I'm living now, I do like it but, I wish I could move to a different area here, even just away from the neighbours would be an improvement :p.
Seriously though, the neighbours are a nightmare and trying to sell anything on Gumtree (think UK version of Craigslist) 95% of the time when I tell them the area, people disappear :S. It's not the worse area here but, it's not the best either. We live in a 2 bed first floor flat and I'd love to live in a house now at this stage.

We were looking at moving several months back but, issues with everywhere we looked based on our circumstances (ie partner is disabled so claims housing benefit and not everywhere takes benefit recipients and we have pets and not everywhere takes pets, it tends to be one or the other but, not both :( so we stopped looking for now).

Pahrump is the home of the third co-founder of Apple Computer, Ronald Wayne. Wayne now lives a quiet lifestyle there, selling stamps and rare coins.

It also appears to get hotter than h^&*, which is what I'm looking to move away from. But then again, nearer to Reno, I'm also not too keen on Gusts could reach 85 mph in some areas.

All by my lonesome, I'm about to drive seven hundred miles in one day, stay in a city I only drove through forty years ago, hang around giant casinos with complete strangers, then drive another seven hundred miles back. That spooks me and I might just cancel the whole thing. But it also makes want to do it even more – face your fears and all that.

I have about a day to chicken out, so place your bets.

Just wondering how others feel about where they live. I've been all over the map--literally and figuratively!--and have lived in places I couldn't stand as well as places I really loved.

I'm interested in hearing your stories. If you love where you're living, why? If you hate where you're living, why? and why do you stay there?

For me, I spent years living in a place where I never felt at home, and that I strongly disliked. It was circumstance that caused that.

I've been back home in California now for eight years, and I couldn't be more thrilled. I feel like *ME* again. Seeing the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains every day warms my soul. And being able to practically live outside 365 days a year is so...NORMAL! I love that I can do that again.

So, what's your situation?

Everywhere has its goods and bads...

I lived in Hawaii for 8 years for high school and college. I hated the cost of living there. The job market is really good for college graduates in accounting. The amount of money you get paid is enough to cover for your living expenses anything beyond that is not possible. the housing there is terribly overvalued. I mean they have excellent weather never gets cold. The police are really nice, i got some minor traffic tickets nothing super expensive.

I moved back to california and i love it and hate it. I hate how police are super harsh. they pull you over here comes an 800 dollar traffic ticket. i really enjoy having a modified car but its impossible to get away with having a modified car in california. Cost of living is super expensive like hawaii but atleast the housing looks better. good luck finding a job.....the jobs that i see most people work are manual labor jobs and retail jobs..but if you want a job out of college good luck.....competition is fierce.

I left california because i hate the laws and police enforcement. I moved to vegas and so far its pretty normal over here.....

New York will always be my home but I've finally decided to move. Its just a matter of when. Cost of living is just too high and its a struggle. When I hear my friends living in houses that are cheaper than 1 bedroom apts in other states.....it boggles my mind. Currently saving up.

There are always cheaper places to live but wages in that area are likely less as well. Best of luck.
