Root [AT&T] Does Software version affect Rooting procedure/software?

I just got a new S3 to replace one that broke on me and the first thing that happened was that the software updated due to a push from ATT. When i tried to root it the phone stopped working and gave me a bunch of errors saying that the android.system.acore had stopped working.

I've exchanged phones again but I'm wondering if the rooting routines need to be updated due to the new software?

All I really want is to root the device so I can restore my system from my original phone with Titanium. Where can I get the best tutorial for rooting the S3?
