Does this sound right for battery usage?

That's really too short of a call to judge talk time with....

^. 10 mins doesn't really make a good test.

Anyways, first thing that comes to mind is:

menu->settings->about phone->battery->battery use->cell standby.

Look for "Time without signal" and it should be less than 10 percent, if any at all. If you don't see this, it's 0. If it is over 10 percent theres a problem. It could be bad signal, poor signal+hand covering the bottom ( Don't do this...that's where the antenna is! ), or somehow you got into GSM auto instead of CDMA auto ( In this case, you'll probably see TWOS in the 40-50% range. )
