    All,

Ok, admittedly my first day with the EVO 4G went horribly. The reason- my battery lasted from 8 am to 12pm. I was aware that the battery would go fast but shocked to see it actually do it.

Yesterday I played with a few settings. I disabled the Sense UI and installed Launcher Pro, Adv Task Killer. I noticed a big difference in battery usage with LP running than I did with Sense. It used a lot less juice. I then installed Adv Task Killer and have it closing all apps when the screen goes off with the exception of Gmail, Messages, and Voicemail. Huge difference. Started with a full charge yesterday and with decent usage (surf, wifi, camera work, 4G - thanks to widget) by the end of the day I still had 49% battery left. This morning I had 44% left. Much, much better. I know many people say that Adv Task Killer bog their handsets but I have yet to notice any lag. I'm sure Launcher Pro is much better on battery as well.

So far so good. As this is my first Android phone I think I am doing ok. I am now using my iPhone 3G as an iPod. One question- I notice that Amazon MP3 seems to run even when I have never even opened it. Should I delete it or what? Any more advice?

firstly, if you choose to use a task manager, I would read up on how to use one appropriately. IMO its not great to have your phone kill all apps every time you put your phone to sleep. Look up the stickies on task managers and battery troubleshooting.
As far as the mp3 store, as much as u kill it with your task manager, after a little bit, it will turn on again. Also, you can't delete it like a few other apps on your phone.

There's actually an update for the mp3 store that SHOULD stop it from running

Sadly, I found out that one of my absolute favorite apps in the market has been KILLING my phone. The app 'Screebl', which claims to help save battery life, has accounted for OVER 90% of my battery usage!!! Sad to say I had to let it go. Now I get pretty decent battery life.:)

If you have not installed the patch then: Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>HTC Sense>Clear Defaults (this just disables sense when you hit the home button) > Home> Launcher.

I don't think Sense goes truly away but you will be running the stock Android Launcher.

I also think installing any third party application will allow you to do the same thing.

I just love to see former iPhone users use a little patience and research and actually be happy with the Evo. The phone is an awesome phone once you know how to use it properly. I don't have any battery issues right now, as I can practically go on till the evening without charging, and this is with a days worth of MP3 playing through bluetooth. I do have an extra battery, but right now I only alternate them day to day. Cheers to you mate, and welcome to the Android world!

You cant anymore after the last update but there are many home replacements with the vanilla look such as launcher pro or adw launcher, so if you do not like sense i would highly recommend them

Thanks man, this phone truly is on a level miles above the iPhone 3G. Sure, the smoothness of iOS is enviable but in the end, it wasn't the feature I wanted most out of my phone. I wanted the big screen, I wanted Android, I wanted multitasking and I knew it would have a learning curve.

It's damned hard to put this thing down and I still have 22% battery left. That's considerably better than what I was getting on my iPhone and Pandora has been running for 45 minutes and change. I guess the lesson is to be patient and willing to play and learn.

and read through the battery threads, because there are tons of things to try that should make a difference..
Here is one of my favorites. do these exactly as listed.

    1. Turn yor device ON and charge for 8 hours or more
    2. Unplug it, turn the phone OFF, Plug it in, and charge for 1 hour
    3. Unplug it, turn phone ON for two minutes, and then turn it off.
    4. Plug it in, and charge for another hour

Try this, and see if you get better life..I get about 18 hours of normal use after doing this.
It was posted by HTC, so they claim it makes a difference

sorry, since there are about a thousand similar battery threads on this board, asking the same questions over and over and over and over again, I dont remember which one of them I saw it on..
If you dont believe it, then don't try it...

There is a program called Startup Auditor that will allow you to stop apps from starting with your phone when you first turn it on, and will also stop apps from starting themselves up, which is good against the Sprint apps and other apps like Amazon MP3, etc.

I found that doing this really helped my battery life.

Hell, for .99 it's worth a try. I am pretty satisfied with what I have done so far. I went a solid 21 hours with moderate web, Pandora, email, and phone use between charging. That, for me, is pretty good. I intend to invest in a car charger so that I can use Google Maps/GPS. Given the amount of resources it uses, it's foolish to think you'll get great battery life running that program very long.

I know people have had issues with ATK, but so far, so good. I definitely think using Launcher Pro has made a difference. Love this phone and still amazed by the variety of things it can do.
