I remember when I saw video from google showing off the power of android by playing doom on the current prototype device they were using. Whatever happened to that?

Did ID decide not to let them use it or are they waiting till they can charge for it? It would be awesome to play doom on a phone, but so far it is absent :(

I would guess licensing could be an issue. They could be waiting for the storm of the launch to die down. They might be waiting torun an ad showing it off. They could be trying to reach a price point. Magic space elves could have travled through time and well, lets just say anything could be going on.

I hope it comes out soon, Doom would be awesome. Multiplayer Duke Nukem would be even better though... Get some!

Great thread and Drustvold also brings up some great issues. I would assume they are waiting to make it a paid application but even so - if they were - you would think we would have heard SOMETHING about it.

It seems like T-Mobile, HTC, Google are promoting the G1 in waves. Most of it up to now has been word of mouth buzz. Now its on the Big G homepage. Pretty soon you'll see television/radio ads all over the place.

Perhaps its part of the plan... to have something crazy new and exciting mapped out so each week there is buzz worthy stuff for everyone to talk about.

I don't know... hmmmm.... I want to do some digging on this...

I remember I saw ads for Doom on the G1. I think it was just a video though, not a game.

I've seen video of Starcraft 2 as well. It would be sweet if they would make that into a game...

    1. They would have to have gotten licensing permission from ID to show said video.

    2. Why would they show something they're not intending to release causing harsh backlash from the community?

    Give it time.

    What about:

You can not currently install apps to the SD card so there is a massive space limitation on the phone, I'm not sure how big it will end up being but it would not shock me if it exceeded 30mb, depending on the graphics.

    - or -

    The game wasn't finished?

Their prototype may have a different setup than the G1 as far as storage, or they may have manually put it on the SD card, either way... There are a bunch of 3D games that are near completion and not released yet... all we can do is wait

Just like Rob said, the early phases of advertisement were word of mouth/internet related. And what better way to tickle their target's fancy than showing them what a lot of us remember as the beginning of gaming on their new platform. How many geeks went and told their geek friends they saw Doom running on a new iPhone competitor? And apparently it worked if we're all sitting here still wondering where it is lol. Secondly, I doubt T-Mobile/Google (can we use a new name for that, like Toogle or T-Google?) could get away with giving that away for free.

The memory limitation is likely also key, although I doubt it would be over 30GB. However, I don't have an original version to find out so maybe I'm wrong.

I am pretty source there's an open source doom like engine. If you wanted to play the original doom you would still need access to the WAD files (game files). I am sure there are some free WAD files out there too. See if anyone is keen enough to try and port it to Android if no one has already started.
