Is it safe to download and install any Android apps that are available on the internet? Or are there recommended 'safe downloading' practices which I should follow?

    Bump again.
Is it generally thought to be safe to download apps from Android market?

    Yes.

As to "any apps available....", check your sources, look for feedback from other users etc before downloading or installing apps found 'in the wild'. Just use common sense.

How great is the risk of viruses and other malware? Should I look for AntiVirus/anti-malware apps to download? Are there any that are particularly recommended?

Anything I download, whether for the PC or any other platform, is run through multiple AV/malware scanners out of habit. I'm not aware of any threats targeting Android in the wild but any d/l could theoretically attack a PC.
