got the wife a d2, and me a fascinate
    rooted em
then i went to install wifi tether by emailing the apk to each phone
(yes, i know i coulda just copied it, i was testing this method)

the d2 was able to install the apk, the fascinate only let me preview it

is this a diff between 2.1 and 2.2? or the phones themselves?

Not sure where the difference is, but there is an app that lets you install from attached APKs: tAttachApkInstaller.

Once installed, when you hit Preview on an APK attachment, it will bring up the Complete action using dialog and you can choose tAttachApkInstaller.

2.2 has an updated version of gmail that allows for downloads from the app. Unfortunately 2.1 does not have this feature. Apps like the one LukeOlson mentioned will allow for this. You can also open your gmail account in the browser and download from there.
