So I picked up my Droid Eres today and I must say I love it. It actually performed much better than the store's Motorola Droid in both download speed and navigating the UI.

I'm just wondering if it is going to be upgradable to Android 2.0? - through verizon or hacks.

I'd like to get that Navigation Beta going. Is there any way I can get that on my phone?

Is there anything else that I'm missing with this phone by not going with the Motorola Droid that I might actually miss?

Thanks, I got 30 days to exchange it if I want to. Not going back to the LG dare for sure haha.

Yes, the phone is upgradeable, but no, not yet.:) Basically, it uses HTC's Sense UI and HTC has to redo the UI to be functional with Android 2.0 . They've stated that the Hero phones will receive 2.0, but they haven't announced when.

So the short answer is, yes, you will get it. The other short answer is that we really don't know when yet.
  3. Andrew: My current phone is also the Dare, and I can NOT wait to get rid of it! I ordered my Eris about 2 hours ago from the Verizon website... I did not want to hassle with mail-in rebates and all that junk, and I try to buy as little from evil Best Buy as possible. :)

REALLY looking forward to this phone. I was about --> <-- close to leaving Verizon for the Sprint HTC Hero a month ago, but when I got word of Verizon getting their own Hero, I decided to wait. The Droid doesn't interest me, I don't like physical keyboards and I've had terrible experiences with Motorola phones in the past.

Anyway, to answer your other question... Yes, the Eris will be upgradeable to Android 2.0, at some point in the future. HTC has previously announced that the "Hero" phones will be skipping Android 1.6 and going straight to Android 2.0, once they finish porting the SenseUI over to 2.0.

Post more about the phone! I'm so anxious to hear more hands-on reports from people who have already picked up their Eris!

So I'm sure that there are going to be a bunch of newbie questions here, since this is a new phone. Many of us (myself included) are new to android as well.

    Yes, I searched.

Yes, I looked through the stickies.

I am not a forum newbie, just here! So with that.....Two questions:

    1) How do you select multiple items (say emails)?
    2) How the hell do you select text?

Lovin the phone so far. Not liking the difficulty I had transferring contacts in....

Second this. The upgrade to 2.0 was verified by a VZW Droid rep visiting our local VZW store yesterday for the launch. I looked him right in the face and said "If the Eris isn't going to get 2.0 I don't want it." His answer..."buy with confidence...it will happen."

Does the Eris require the $30 data plan?
  7. Jacko: Yes, it does. All Android phones on Verizon will require the smartphone data plan at $29.99/mo.

the store phone might have had a ton of programs open, that seems to slow mine down slightly. I like advanced task killer free, just 2 clicks to close the major ones.

not sure about multiple items, but if you long click on most text fields it brings up a menu

I'm really enjoying mine. I took some desktops I had on my computer and they transfered really well to the smaller screen. It was really easy to setup each page and there are a lot of options.
calls have been clear on both ends, the dialing system is fairly intuitive, it might take some getting used to.
hardware seems very capable of handling everything, not noticing much lag at all.
It looks and feels great, I recommend the verizon rubbery cover they offer

overall a very impressive little device

Does anyone know how to get that ANNOYING grey Verizon arc off of the lock screen???? It irritates the living hell out of me EVERYTIME I see that thing. A nice plain old wallpaper would do just fine. Also, is there a way to put different wallpapers on each of the separate pages? Thanks for any help

This plan was actually cheaper than my BB plan, so that was a nice suprise too.

Does the Eris have a landscape keyboard (where you turn the phone sideways vs typing Blackberry style?)

I like a long keyboard instead of the cramped way you have to use the Blackberry... I can't consider this phone at all if it works like that.

Yes it does. I will have either depending on the way the phone is orientated.

Thank you guys, that was a deal breaker for me... I'm looking forward to the end of my NE2. :)

No on the arc. All 7 of the screens use one large background image it just slightly scrolls it to the sides. The icons scroll on top of the image at a faster rate.

I am not sure about Navigation Beta, but there is a version of NAV4ALL for Android.

Download Nav4All (Android) 9.0 for Android - Free GPS navigation for your mobile phone. - Softpedia

You may miss the hardware keyboard on the droid. Although, this won't be a dealbreaker for me. The virtual keyboard on the Eris is very accommodating.

Other than the keyboard, the Motorola Droid has a faster processor, larger screen, larger resolution size, and more memory. Although, to me, the Eris is sufficient enough in all of the mentioned categories.

OK, was hoping I wasn't the only one who noticed the wallpaper had panoramic properties to it.

    i love the phone.
the most amazing feature to me was the predictive text.
i literally prolly only hit 30% of the correct letters but the phone always knows exactly what i'm trying to type.
i can type fast and accurately with one hand, and its by FAR the best predictive auto correct i've ever used.
