If I was getting a new phone right now, probably the Droid X. Simply because if I was getting a new phone/contract I wouldn't know about all the rooting capabilities. Even then, I usually go for the newest product. Once the Droid X is rooted like the Droid, it will be even better rooted.

Moral of the story, by the end of the year this question won't matter because the 2GHZ devices and the Moto "super phone" will be coming out. That's when I will probably be upgrading.

If my contract was up right now I would be getting a droid X. Since its not and I already have a droid I am waiting until LTE phones come at the end of the year. If you already have the droid I dont see the X as a big enough step to be worth it considering whats coming at the end of the year. Motorola has promised a 2ghz phone by then

All good points. Here's my situation. My wife has an Eris (for one more day). She got it when I got my Droid back when Verizon was doing the buy a Droid get an Eris for free. She's had issues with the phone since day one and is on her 2nd replacement Eris. This one isn't giving her issues, but she just wants something different. So I called Verizon yesterday and they gave me two options - they could send us another Eris or they would allow me to upgrade to a Droid and pay $149 price for it. We chose to get the Droid. At the end of the call with Verizon he informed me that this new phone would be eligible for the 30-day return thing they do. Meaning we could then return the Droid in two weeks and get the X (and yes, pay the difference). I can't help but think about getting my wife the Droid X just so we could have the latest phone. What would you guys do?

EDIT: And yes, I am planning to root her Droid and most likely I'll install JRummy's Kangerade Froyo with the pink theme.

@rodeo i am in the exact same situation as you. i had an eris and had a ton of problems with it. i was able to switch to the moto droid and i too am eligible for the 30 day return and was considering the switch to the droid x. keep in mind, verizon charges a 35.00 restocking fee, on top of the difference in cost.

for my situation i am going to agree with OMJ. while the droid x may be a better phone now, by the end of the year there are going to be phones that blow that out of the water. i think your wife will be happy in the performance difference just between the stock droid coming from the eris. i was totally surprised its like night and day.

    anyway that's just my .02

for me...its the droid until the 4g phones come out

Thanks for the input. I've never returned a phone, so I wasn't aware of the $35.00 stocking fee. That might seal the deal for us. And she's very much aware of the difference between the Eris and the Droid, as I've got a Droid. It's not her that is looking to possibly get the X, it's me and my never-ending desire to have the latest gadgets. She'll be elated to have a rooted Droid running android 2.2 with a pink theme.

Stocking fees are a joke. They're just a ploy to make money and sometimes you can get around them.

Last year though I had an LG and it never worked so they told me to pick out any phone in the store to replace it. I picked a phone that was a lot cheaper so they gave me all sorts of free crap to make up for the cost. It was pretty cool walking out with a bag full of goodies I got for free. So it does work both ways, if you get a phone that's cheaper they'll usually make up the cost.
